Fireworks
"I told you, I don't want to watch the fireworks, especially not with you."
"Oh come on Shads, it's not bad. Plus there'll be a day when you won't be able to see the fireworks anymore!"
"Do I need to remind you that I can't die?"
"Mm but I won't be with you."
Shadow stiffened up. "And what makes you think I care?" he growled.
Sonic grinned and hooked his arm around his counterpart's shoulder. "Because I know you do," he teased while giving him a friendly nuzzle on his cheek.
Shadow pushed him off aggressively. "So now you're psychic."
"Psychic as in it's easy for me to read your mind. Oh, what's this?" Sonic looked up at the night sky, feigning thought. He smirked and snapped his fingers. "I'm getting a reading, and it says you do want to watch the fireworks with me!"
Rolling his eyes and contemplating whether or not he should just punch him on the spot, Shadow turned his head and continued to walk along the shore of the beach.
The two hedgehogs bickered by the seaside, throwing insults and remarks at each other that were drowned out by the crashing waves. The smooth sand became distorted as they began swinging kicks and dashing about.
Under the dark sky, under the twinkling stars, under the gleam of the silver moon which looked down upon their rivalry fight. In the cold wind, in the heat of the moment, it was only them. It was always them. Who else?
One, and a boulder no longer blocked part of the cliffs, smashed into jagged scree.
Two, a large billow of sand erupted into the crisp air as a blur rushed forwards.
Three...nothing.
A sigh. A chuckle.
Shuffling and dusting the golden sand off their fur, they stared at each other, one on top of the other, awkward.
10, ruby eyes met emeralds.
9, heart beats raced.
8, gaze deepened.
7, breath shaky.
6, eyes fluttering.
5, a subtle lean in.
4, a light caress.
3, eyes closing.
2, lips parting.
1, connection.
Fireworks shot into the black sky and burst into millions of bright coloured flares. They flew like glowing sirens, announcing to all. The previous dark sky was now illuminated by shooting rays of brilliant light.
For a minute, the hedgehogs gazed at the fireworks, the blazing lights reflecting in their eyes.
"Hey," Shadow said, almost a whisper. Sonic turned to face him once again. "Happy New Year, you godamn faker." He pulled the blue's head down and drew him into another fervent kiss. Sonic smirked.
"You too, faker."
