Disclaimer: I do not own anything CSI. So sadly I own nothing. Sad, really.
Grissom heaved a heavy sigh as he reread the memo in his hands for what seemed the 100th time. Career day at the local elementary schools; how could he have forgotten?
Why he had been assigned to the task of traveling from school to school to discuss his job as a CSI was beyond him. Possibly someone's idea of a joke. Gil had never been one with exceptional people skills and kids were far from his specialty. Now, hand him a cockroach and he'll spill his life story but that's another story.
So lost was he in thought of this that he was startled by Nick as he passed him by in the hall. "Oh, Nick, how good are you with children?" Oh yes, the wheels were turning in Grissom's mind.
The younger CSI was surprised somewhat by the seemingly random question and looked at his boss curiously. "Alright, I guess. Why…"
"Good. You're going to visit the local elementary schools in the area for their career day." He handed Nick the memo and turned to leave with a self-satisfied smile upon his face.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hey, what?"
"You heard me. Career day."
"Grissom, why me? Why not Catherine or Greg, even?" He gestured to the wide windows on the DNA lad where Greg sat trying to balance a pen on the bridge of his nose. Boredom catches the best of us.
Greg noticed the two men looking at him and gave a small wave as the pen fell to the floor. Grissom waved him over. "Yeah, boss?"
"You're going to be visiting some of the local schools for their Career day, OK?" Grissom was growing tired of the tagging game and wanted to have no more a part of it.
"What?! That's ridiculous. Kids say they want to grow up to be an astronaut or something, not a CSI. They want to play hero as a fireman, not look at dead bodies for a living," Greg protested.
"It doesn't matter; the head of the Crime Lab wants a representative from forensics out there."
Greg sighed and tried to think of something, anything, to get him out of this. Nothing. He mentally berated himself for being such a quick worker. "Alright, I'll go talk to the kiddos. How should I start? Talking about the sleep you lose, the long hours, and total lose of social life? Or the low pay and under appreciation?"
Nick and Grissom shared a look as the young lab tech turned CSI stalked out of the building mumbling about low wages and excessive work.
"I knew we kept him around for a reason," Nick grinned.
