Shelagh looked outside the kitchen window at the setting sun while cradling Teddy in her arms. She loved watching sunsets and the kitchen window of their new home gave a perfect view of it each evening. It was hard to believe that it had already been five months since they moved in and a little over four months since they welcomed Teddy into their family. She walked in the living room to find Angela playing with her toys in the living room and Timothy's Commonwealth Day project from yesterday's festivities sitting on the floor.
"Timothy, come down here for a minute" she said loud enough for him to hear from downstairs.
When Timothy walked into the living room, she told him "Please take your project up to your room"
"Yes mom" he replied as he picked up the poster from the ground.
"Are you still working on homework?" she asked him
"Yes mom, but hopefully I will be done soon" he answered
"That's good" she said
Timothy walked back upstairs and Shelagh put Teddy down in his cot so she could finish tidying up the living room and kitchen. She put the books back on the shelf and folded a blanket that was lying across the couch and put it back in the linen closet. It was when she was washing the dishes from dinner that night that she remembered that exactly a year ago today was the day of Commonwealth Day last year. A huge grin came across her face when she thought what happened that day and she even teared up a little bit as the result of the joy that filled her.
She had just put Angela and Teddy to bed for the night when she heard the front door open later that night. She walked downstairs to find Patrick at the doorstep with his bag and a bouquet of pink roses in hand. She ran up to the doorstep and Patrick handed her the flowers.
"They are so beautiful Patrick" she told him with a huge smile on her face
"I wanted to get you a little something special to celebrate the one year anniversary of you telling me that you were pregnant" he said
"I can't… I can't believe that you actually remembered" she replied as tears filled her eyes.
"I didn't even realize it until I was washing dishes after dinner" she added with a laugh
"Of course I remembered, that was one of the happiest moments of my life" he told her
"I will never forget the face you made when you read the note" she said
Patrick leaned in and gave Shelagh a short, sweet kiss and they rested in each other's embrace with joy and comfort flowing between them.
"We're so lucky, aren't we?" he asked
"I would say that we are very blessed" she answered
"Yes we are" he replied
