Just when Sam had hunted down the last items on his list, it started to snow. The windows of the townhouses were golden eyes in the early evening, promising warmth and home and safety. Some kids were dancing across a front yard, cheering, the faces lifted towards the sky, trying to catch snowflakes with their tongues. He thought of his brother, stuffing the Christmas goose to the sound of some old jazz records and how they fought with all they had for this – ordinary people living ordinary lives, and a smile brightened his face as happiness spread through his body.
