The wind blew fiercely, almost knocking me away from the tree I was hiding behind. The rest of the forest was still, and the only movement came from in front of me. A young boy, probably new to training, and his Pokemon were on the path leading through Viridian Forest. I wasn't a trainer, but I've had more than enough experience, helping my grandfather in the daycare.

The boy was in a wealthy family, which was easy to guess, seeing as how he had a Hitmonlee. He was congratulating it, apparently for defeating a Caterpie. My eyes narrowed. Such treatment of a fighting machine like that was liable to make it soft. That was inexcusable.

No sooner had the boy returned the fighter to it's pokeball, when I dashed from behind my hiding place. With practiced ease, I knocked the ball out of his hands, caught it in mine, and continued my dash into the other side of the woods. I could hear him crying behind me, screaming for me to return it. Tough cookies for him. Better for him to learn now that the world wasn't full of nice happy people who were willing to bend over backward to meet your demands.

I stopped running when I entered a small clearing. I set the ball down and gasped for breath. I was used to running, but not like that. Short sprints, sure, no problem, but not running for an eternity and then some. My stomach didn't appreciate the running either and I left my lunch on the edge of the clearing. Feeling better, I returned to my prize.

With almost a feeling of awe, I picked up the tiny red and white ball. I turned it over a few times in my hand, and then pressed the release button. The fighter appeared in a red flash of light. It looked around, confused, as if expecting a fight. It noticed me then, and entered a fighting stance.

"You will not fight me. I am your new master." It shook it's head fiercely, and started to kick at me. I threw a weak psychic attack on it's mind, and it faltered and fell. "I am your new master. Do not worry, I am not cruel. I am sure that you didn't like that boy I rescued you from."

When I said this, it's expression changed. It went from anger to surprise, as if it didn't think I knew that. It nodded quickly, and then bowed. I grinned, and bowed back. I was going to teach this little bugger a few things. To use it's mind for one. As I observed it, I nodded to myself. It uses it's body as a reflex. It must learn the powers of the mind. I grinned again. Yes, it must learn…
