Disclaimer: Don't own the Doctor, Rose, or the TARDIS. The almighty BBC does. The planet that they are on is mine, and the Ankino's are mine too. So basically, if you recognise it, I don't own it. If you don't recognise it, I probably do own it. I know I own something round here, I just have to remember what that is…

Reason why.

He wandered down to where the lake glimmered in the night. A dark pit, reflecting faithfully the shadows of the darkness.

A slight figure was sitting beside the darkness, shadows adorning the brown hair.

Rose let the last tears fall to the ground as she held the stray cat-alien close. The Slitheen had been hard enough to deal with and she was unconscious after the whole Dalek problem so that wasn't so bad.

She looked over to the Tardis again, shuddering as she imagined what horrors the doctor could have seen that day.

From what the doctor had shown her afterwards and then his regeneration, well, Rose mused to herself, she had never seen the doctor look like that before, it was a definite improvement.

The doctor walked up behind the dark figure, unsure as to what his next move should be. Strange how he could make the choices that doomed entire races, yet he couldn't find the courage to talk to this one girl. The one girl that meant the world to him and he couldn't even say the words.

Rose had asked him to bring her to this planet. There wasn't even anyone here, the race of Ankino had died out years ago. It was a cold, dark place, the world where shadows were born and despair clung to the ground like a morning frost in winter.

Steeling himself, he gingerly reached out a hand to touch her shoulder. He paused for a moment, silently going over

The babble of voices in his mind, each one telling him to go for it.

Taking a deep breath, he touched her shoulder gently, startling the girl. She spun around to face her attacker, hands raised.

Till she saw who it was.

Rose stood up, unsure as to what her next move should be. The doctor merely stood there, waiting. She hated that, he would never be the one to make the first move.

"I'm sorry."

Rose stopped. She had never heard that line before. She started to talk but was stopped. Entranced, she let him continue.

"You asked me why I couldn't save everyone. Why I couldn't make the future better. Even if I could make things how they should be, I wouldn't."

He paused for breath, a single crystalline tear falling to the unfeeling ground.

"It doesn't even matter if it's someone who you would give your life for in a second to save. It can't be done."

Rose felt the doctor's pain. The Tardis wanted her to heal him. He was broken. She felt the power she held over him. Smiling slightly, she touched the doctors lips with her own. Feeling the light enter his spirit.

They broke apart, wrapped in each other arms, as the sun cast her fiery gaze onto the world.

The tardis laughed to herself as she watched the scene outside. Her doctor was happy at last. She set the co-ordinates for Barcelona and settled down to watch the fun.
