"Sparrowpaw, no!" Larkpaw raced after his mottled brown sister, his gray pelt prickling with worry. "Don't go by the river! RiverClan will have your tail!"
"I just want to catch one fish!" Sparrowpaw protested, calling over her shoulder as she ran. "One. That's all." Then she turned away from her brother's frightened blue gaze.
"Sparrowpaw!" Larkpaw yowled, though he kept following his sister anyway. "Come on back to camp! Icewhisker's gonna get worried!"
"Don't worry about our mother," Sparrowpaw meowed as they padded towards the bubbling river. "We'll just tell her we were hunting."
"When we come back with no prey?"
"We'll catch a mouse or two on the way back." Sparrowpaw bent over the running river. "Look! A fish!" She raised a paw, poised to strike.
"Sparrowpaw, please!" Larkpaw pleaded as his sister lashed a paw out a dark shape under the water.
"Foxdung! I missed!" Sparrowpaw spat. Her green eyes were fiery with determination. She raised a paw again.
"Sparrowpaw, we have to go home!" Larkpaw pressed on.
Sparrowpaw ignored him and flung her paw into the stream. Her weight was unbalanced, and she toppled into the deep river.
"Sparrowpaw!" Larkpaw yowled. He leaped blindly into the stream in a desperate attempt to save his sister.
The river tore at his fur, weighing him down. His paws flailed wildly as he fought to keep his head above the raging water. "Sparrowpaw!" the gray apprentice screamed as he caught sight of her head going under.
"No!" Larkpaw wailed, splashing frantically. "Sparrowpaw!" Everything else faded away but his sister's soaked head above the stream. Soon the water pulled Larkpaw under. Everything faded to black. I can't breathe, Larkpaw thought dazedly. I need air . . .

Light was thrust upon Larkpaw. He blinked blearily, struggling to wake up. His memory flashed into his mind, and he shot up. "Sparrowpaw!"
Scents of herbs washed over him. The medicine cat den, Larkpaw realized. He was in a nest. He whirled around, looking for Sparrowpaw's sleeping body in one of the other nests. "Sparrowpaw?"
"Larkpaw!" The medicine cat, Dawnfrost, rushed into the den. "You're awake! How do you feel?"
"Where's Sparrowpaw? She-she was with me," Larkpaw stuttered. "She-she fell in th-the stream-"
Dawnfrost's eyes glazed over. "I'm sorry, Larkpaw," she whispered. "Sparrowpaw- she drowned."
Larkpaw felt as if he was falling, even though he didn't move from his nest. "No," he breathed, even though he knew it was true.
This had all happened because of one fish.
Now Larkpaw's life was shattered.
Okay! Tell me what you think, people! You know I love reviews! ; )
