WAVE

Bloop-bloop-bloooop...bloop!

"Awright! That's game!" Jaden rolled off of the couch in his moment of triumph, collapsing into a heap of laughter on the floor.

"Aw, rats!" Hassleberry sank into the cushions of the couch, the game controller limp in his cramping hands. "Looks like you licked me, again, Sarge!"

"Who are you kidding, Hassleberry?" said Syrus, sitting cross-legged on the floor. "Jaden is the King of Games! King of Video Games, that is."

Jaden arose and set the controller on the table, one hand forming a victory sign, the other rubbing his stomach. "Yup! And you know else is king-sized?"

"Your appetite?" Syrus guessed.

"Yep! C'mon, let's go polish off the leftover pizza from last night!" Jaden hopped over the couch like a gymnast and trotted towards the door. "Pizza tastes best when it's cold!"

"It's a miracle that there's any leftover pizza at all," mumured Syrus as he sidled around an armchair and disappeared.

Hassleberry was the last to leave the room, but before he did, he stopped in front of the glass display case. Alice had been watching the boys play the entire time with her unblinking icy blue eyes. Her smile, small and delicate as a rose petal, softened the blow of defeat, however small-scale it was to begin with.

Even after all of this time, Alice still brought warmth to Hassleberry's cheeks. No words were exchanged; they couldn't be, nor were they needed. A smile rippling the boy's lips, he waved his fingers at the little lady, bidding her farewell, just for the time being.

Call him crazy--he didn't think so--but after a few moments more, Hassleberry swore he saw her lift and fan her tiny hand, as slowly as a blooming orchid.

She was waving back.
