Gayle Smyth was searching. Fortunately, she knew who she was looking for. Yes, she was looking for a person. She had heard his name many decades ago when she had been summoned to the Volturi for a kind of job interview. (There she had met Eleazar, who, after standing by her for a few moments, had muttered that he would like to see my conversations with Carlisle Cullen. She had at that point corrected him and said that he would probably like to hear her conversation with Mr. Cullen more than see it.)
But Gayle herself was different. Vampires all had calculating minds of course, but hers was almost a calculator itself. Every single thing that entered her mind had an equation, a set of measurements upon it, or some other analytical factor. It wasn't all numbers, but it was all science. And science kept evolving

No vampire that Gayle had met could remember their human life in great detail. She couldn't either. But one factor in particular came to mind: Humans were destroying the natural planet. The animals were not. The animals had to be protected
The only logical answer was to narrow down the human population. It had to be done. But Gayle knew that she had been a human once, and while she did not remember most of it, she remembered bits.
A more complicated thought that had stuck out in her mind more than most was: most humans are still innocent, and have done nothing that they have realised is wrong.
I should not kill a human before I realise its motives.
I shouldn't kill an animal either.
But I am closer to human than an animal.
I need a new kind of nutrition.
Mr. Cullen. Interesting conversations. Mind like mine? Maybe.

I came back from my vision. A new vampire was visiting? She'd only wanted to talk, at least, but what did she want to talk about?
"Oh, that's interesting," Edward responded to my thoughts. Everyone in the living room was looking at me, mostly with interest, some with confusion. Renesmee toddled up to me and patted my face, asking what I'd seen.
"We're going to have a visitor, Renesmee," I answered. "She wants to talk with us."
"What about?" enquired Bella. "Is it curiosity about our lifestyle, or is it something else?"
"Um...I don't really know."
"Do you know when she'll get here?" asked Esme.
"Give me a second." The weather in my vision had been cloudy with a few patches of blue sky. The next time that would happen would be... "Six days from now, I think."
Everyone nodded their heads and went back to their own business.
But we still had to prepare.
A/N: I know I probably shouldn't start on another story before I've finished the others I've started, but this plot bunny was eating my mind.
