The house was crowded. Overly so. Too many bodies packed into such a small space, but she couldn't complain. Shouldn't. Today was a happy day.
A celebration.
She slipped through the back door unnoticed. Her bare feet quiet as she moved through the trees. The sound of the waves called to her. She loved the beach, the way the sand felt beneath her feet and between her toes. The smell of the water, the air. It eased something inside of her. Calmed her.
So many thoughts. Too many.
The what ifs and whys no longer a prominent mantra running wild inside of her. She had accepted her destiny. Her life.
But still she yearned.
She wanted something. Needed it. Knew she could have it if she just allowed herself to open up slightly. Let her guard down. He wasn't asking for much. Would wait forever if she made him. She didn't understand what he saw in her. She was this broken thing. Damaged and incomplete. And yet he still wanted her, in any form, friends or lovers. Both if she would allow it.
She tilted her head back, eyes closed and smiled. Toes digging deep into the warm sand.
It had been such a long time since anyone had shown an interest in her as a woman. For a while she was this angry shrew. Heartbroken and void of caring. She hated everyone and everything. Her life, her destiny. Everything.
Then he smiled at her. The simplest of things. She had growled in return which made him smile wider. He was handsome she wouldn't deny that fact. Caring and so... amazingly perfect.
She laughed softly.
Amazingly perfect. Not words she would expect herself to use to describe someone. But she had and he is. He makes her smile, laugh and just act her age, but most importantly he makes her forget. Forget the pain and the heartache she suffered. The loss and betrayal.
He encourages her to be a better person. To let all that negative energy go. To try to forgive. And she's trying. She's trying so damn hard to let it all go. She didn't want to be that cold person she once was. Who hated the thought of love, of happiness. Thinking she didn't deserve it because there was something wrong with her. That she wasn't good enough.
She breathes deeply. Relaxing her body. Smiling as the ocean breeze whips her hair around her face.
"I wondered where you had gone."
The deep baritone voice soothes her immediately. The warmth from his body comforting.
"Just needed some air." Her eyes are still closed, the smile slightly larger.
"You OK?"
She waits for a moment, opening her eyes and turning to face him. Fingers sliding between his own. The look of surprise is quickly followed by his beautiful radiant smile.
"I am now." She replied, smiling so wide her cheeks ache.
