Disclaimer: I unfortunately do not own Gilmore Girls. Sad day.

A/N: This story does not have Luke and Lorelai end up together. Because right now they both need to grow up. Ugh. I think they are soulmates, but they need to think about what it takes to really be in a relationship. So for this little ficlet, Lorelai and Chris are still together. But have no fear, it wont be for long...

Cold Nights

It didn't feel the same. It didn't feel right. He didn't feel right.

The moment she woke up in his bed, the first time in a long time, she knew that it wasn't right. Chris just wasn't Luke. As good of a connection as they had, he just wasn't Luke.

But what about all the things Luke wasn't?

Luke wasn't able to keep up with her pop culture references.
Luke wasn't able to keep up with her in general.
Luke wasn't able to let her in.
Luke wasn't willing to let her in.
Luke wasn't willing to trust her.
Luke wasn't willing to follow her.
Or fight for her.

She thought back to their date last night. A drive-in movie complete with popcorn, candy and a classic car. It was nice. It would start feeling normal after a while.

----------------------------

It had been months since she shared a bed with Luke. More than a year actually.

Now that she was sharing her bed with a man again, Lorelai Victoria Gilmore got to wake up to that wonderful feeling of waking up next to someone. That feeling that ensured the knowledge of their trust in you, reinforced their love and let you know that they wanted you near always.

Staring at him, at Chris, she wondered what was wrong. This man was willing to love her. This man shared himself with her. Not just physically, but emotionally. Something Luke had ceased to do a long time ago. She heard Chris sigh in his sleep and watched him turn towards her. She snuggled into his arms, into his chest, pressing herself against him, trying to be as close to him as possible. Making sure every bit of them that could possibly touch, did, she closed her eyes and thought. No it didn't feel the same as it did with Luke, but was it supposed to? Yes Luke was certain things to her that Chris wouldn't be for a long time: confidant, coffee man, best friend. But Chris could possibly be those. Or someone else could. Maybe Luke could. If he was willing. If he grew up. If she was willing to stop guarding her heart again. She had kept it from people all her life, with the exception of Rory. She never fully trusted anyone with it. Only Rory. But then Luke.

She took a deep breath and tried to sleep. Yes she loved Luke, she still loved Luke. But that was ok. Heartbreak is inevitable when you fall in love. He would always have a piece of her heart, regardless of whether or not they had their middle, their end, or were never meant to be together in the first place. And she was ok with that. She had no regrets about what they had, no regrets about moving forward.

At least that's what she told herself.

She still couldn't believe her daughter was getting married. Her love had said 'good riddance' to his father and family and came for her. She was sad when she realized that she was jealous of her daughter.

She still couldn't believe that her love didn't come for her, didn't go with her the one night she said what had been on her mind and in her heart for months and years.

If he came back, she would let him. She didn't love him despite his faults, she loved him for them. They made him human, they made him hers. Her coffee man, her lover, her angel. He's got wings. Maybe they would take him back to her.

Ok, so you know that pretty blue button at the bottom:o)
