Lucy yawned gently, rubbing her eyes. The windows were bright, and it was snowing lightly. Her room was cold, but she was as warm as could be under her large comforter. Jack wasn't in bed; she assumed that he was getting his presents ready. Lucy smiled a bit. He was always rushing at the last minute on holidays.
She stretched and yawned a bit more before putting on her house shoes and robe. Ambling down the hallway, she began to smell the ham and eggs, her family's traditional Christmas morning breakfast. She walked into the dining room to see Jack seated, waiting on her.
"Sweetheart, why didn't you wake me?" she asked him. "You didn't need to wait all this time for me to get up."
"You looked so peaceful, my love," he replied, pouring her a cup of tea. "I had a few presents to wrap anyhow." He smiled at her lovingly. "You look so lovely. Happy Christmas, my dearest."
"Happy Christmas, my sweet Jack." This was their first Christmas together as a married couple. Lucy was anticipating the gift opening. She knew he'd adore his presents, which she had left in the care of her maid. Oh, it was so perfect! He'd certainly love it.
Lucy excitedly ate her breakfast, and began to pester Jack to hurry. "Jack, let's open presents now, please?" He began to eat even slower, making her only ask more heatedly.
He finally finished, wiping his mouth as Lucy practically dragged him into the parlor. "I have a perfect present for you, my dearest," she said excitedly.
"I have a great one for you too, Lucy," he said as he smiled. "You go first."
Giddily, Lucy called in the maid, who brought in a large box with a bow on top. She sat it in front of the Christmas tree as Lucy smiled. She was excited to see Jack's face when he saw what was inside.
He unwrapped it slowly, also excited to see what it would be. He heard something moving inside of it, which prompted him to hurry. He saw a little nose pop out of the box, and then the whole present. It was a little dog. Jack smiled at Lucy. Before he could say anything, she cut in, "It's a King Charles Spaniel! They're so sweet, and anybody who's anybody has one. Oh, aren't you happy, my darling?"
"Of course, Lucy," he said. The puppy was crawling onto his lap, and he couldn't help but fall in love with it. "I got you a lovely present too, and...well, it's definitely quite funny how this turned out," he laughed. Very confused, Lucy asked him what it was. Jack summoned the maid again, who brought in yet another box.
Lucy quickly yet carefully opened the box, and out sprang a little white kitten, as sweet as could be. Lucy gasped and the puppy tried to jump to the kitten, but was held back by Jack. "Oh, sweetheart, what a sweet kitten!" Lucy exclaimed, holding it closely. "Goodness, we certainly buy well for each other!"
"I do hope that they both get along well," he said, still holding the puppy back as the kitten was already beginning to tease it.
"I got you this dog, Jack, because it reminded me a bit of you," said Lucy as as she snuggled the kitten. "It's very sweet and noble, as you are, and terribly attractive, too."
Jack blushed a bit and replied, "How funny, I got you the kitten because it reminded me of you. Very sweet and incredibly adorable, not to mention playful." He leaned in and kissed Lucy warmly. " I'm so happy to be sharing this holiday with you. Happy Christmas, my sweet Lucy."
"Happy Christmas, my darling Jack," said said as she kissed him back.
