"Why are you here?" he asked her coldly. In a word, he was angry. He was angry because for the first time in his life, he didn't take advantage of an opportunity. He could've gotten out alive with the small brunette from his district, and instead, here he is with this piece of scum from the poorest district in Panem. And he hated it.
She wasn't too happy either. Peeta, her Peeta, was gone. He was dead, and the monster that killed him was alive. She thought of Clove, his district partner. While Katniss didn't kill her, it was partly her fault. Thresh killed Clove and spared her, and she could never repay Thresh because he was dead. She was stubborn, but she didn't want to look like a fool in front of Panem.
"You know what our mentors said-"
"Yeah,I know what Brutus and that stupid old drunk said."
"Do you want to look stupid in front of all of Panem?!" she asked, her voice rising in anger.
He remained calm, and said, "I trained my whole life for this. I have my interview covered."
"We are interviewing together. If one of us messes up, no one is going to talk about how good the other did."
"Fine." his voice sliced through the air. It was the loudest either of them had been. Brutus and Haymitch were outside listening. Brutus said it was just to make sure Cato didn't kill Katniss, but Haymitch said they were just nosy. They both knew the latter was true. They both were a little shocked at the volume of his outburst.
"Okay. So how do we "become friends"?" she asked, putting air quotes when she said becoming friends.
"You could try being nice." he said smirking.
"I could try being nice?" she asked, she was really getting angry now. Her fists were balled up. Cato, being the career he was, noticed immedatly.
"What are you gonna do firegirl? Hit me?" he said mockingly, pointing his head in the direction of her fists.
"She turns around so he can't see her face. She closes her eyes and counts to ten under her breath. He just watches silently. Her fists unroll themselves and she turns around. She was much calmer than before.
"Fine. I'll be nice, If you do too."
"Whatever firegirl. Now answer my questions, and I'll answer yours."
"Sure..."she said, dragging the word out.
"What's your favorite color?" he asked.
"Green. Like the forest."
"Like the arena?" he questioned.
"Like the forest. What is yours?" she answered.
"Blue, I guess. Like a dark blue."
"That's so unoriginal." she teased. He just frowned.
"Whatever. What is your favorite food?"
"Whatever I can get. Food doesn't come easy in District 12."
Later that night, Haymitch and Brutus still listened from outside the door. Cato asked the last question.
"Did you actually love Peeta?" he had been waiting all night to ask it.
"I thought I did. But you can't love somebody you don't know, can you?" she had started crying just thinking about him.
Cato looked at her. He was thinking. "No, you can't. That's why I got to know you." He answered her.
