"My brother is looking for you."
He found her sitting on one of the hospital's long stainless benches, pushed against the white-washed walls of the facility. Sakura sat, her legs stretched out, almost taking up half of the hallway and her arms supporting her weight beside her. With a vacant look in her verdant eyes trained on the room at the other side of the glass across her and something about the angle of her head resting on the wall gave off a sigh like she was not fully there.
However, Itachi's eyes took note of the blood on her arms and the dark spots on her red sleeveless vest, her appearance said otherwise.
The pinkette lifted her head from the wall and turned to watch Itachi approach her with languid steps. She waited silently until he was seated beside her. Two inches away, she could feel his heat.
"So he is."
"Naruto-kun as well." Itachi added, slowly and quietly resting his head against the wall. Across them was the hospital's nursery, its curtains were open and the children of the world were asleep.
Sakura hummed in response, "So you say."
From the corner of his eye, Itachi watched the girl who, if he was told just a year ago, will be sitting beside him; he would've shaken his head and headed the other way. It was impossible then.
A lot of things were impossible then.
Under the scrutiny of Itachi's gaze, Sakura was unyielding. Her pink brows furrowed at the silent accusations in his ink black eyes – why are you not there, why are you so bitter, why, why, why are you so selfish?- and she squeezed her eyes shut.
Why?
Why not?
When she opened them again, resolution renewed in her eyes, she looked at Itachi and he remembered, so clearly, why he came to trust this woman-girl.
"What do you want me to say, Itachi-san? What do you want me to do?"
Itachi knew that she wasn't really asking him for an answer to her questions and even if she did, he wouldn't have any to give her. Want is a complicated thing and wanting for someone, is even more so.
"What do you want to do?"
But somehow, perhaps, delving into one's soul and looking for want is the most complicated thing of all.
What did she want? Sakura questioned herself.
She wanted them safe. She wanted them to stay. She wanted them…
She wants them gone.
Several hours ago, she was fine, living her routine –her life. Until the familiar sounds of rolling wheels against white tiles became haunting and paralyzing the moment familiar faces flitted in her line of sight.
They were there, like the past five years didn't happen – undoing every little piece of herself that she sewed so meticulously.
Itachi knew devotion, he had it he believed. He knew loyalty; he knew sacrifice and he knew confusion. He snuck a look to his medic, but he didn't know her.
So he sighed, "They are still Naruto and Sasuke"
Sakura nodded, "Perhaps, I know the boys who left –like the back of my hands- " She stood and dusted off her pants and watched as one of the babies stirred in his dreams, "But I don't know the men who came back."
End notes: Hello! Thank you for reading! This writing style is new for me, so it'd be real nice if you guys will be patient with me. Expect this to be updated at least every week and if so, chapters will be shorter than usual. 500 - 1,500 words each. Depends on the content of the chapter.
Read and Review!
I am a starving, soon-to-be sleep-deprived graduating student, oh yeah, PM me too! Let's talk! :)
