Sarah had graduated nursing school with honors and had been working at her new job in the hospital for a year. She liked working with the children in the cancer ward, because Sarah had loved children ever since that night. Especially her little brother Toby, who was now in elementary school.
It had been a rough day. Even though she was in management, she still had to deal with the messes her underlings left. She even had to stay late to finish paperwork. When she got back to her apartment, she was exhausted. She showered, dressed for bed, and fell back into her soft bed.
"Maybe I'll call in tomorrow..." where her final thoughts before drifting into a deep, dreamless sleep.
The early sun peaking through the blinds woke her.
"Definitely calling in..."she groaned to herself as she yawned and reached under her pillow for her cell phone. Sarah kept her phone with her at all times just in case the hospital needed her, and it made a handy time-piece at 2 am.
"Sorry sir, I have a terrible stomach bug, I must have picked it up from Mr. Luize yesterday..." she said in her best groan. She listened to the reply.
"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow then." she groaned and rolled over to go back to sleep. Her dreams where always vivid. She dreamed of the labyrinth, of the goblin gardens. In her dream she sat with a basket next to a small peach tree.
"Picnics are nice..." she thought in her dream. Suddenly a large whirring and banging woke her from her sleep. The noise was her neighbor noxiously doing yard work at 10 am. That was the final straw, Sarah was awake. Sarah rolled out of bed and headed to the kitchen for breakfast. Over her bowl of cereal she contemplated her dream.
"A picnic would be nice..." she thought. Sarah placed her bowl in the sink and put on some comfortable outside clothes. She packed a simple picnic of P.B.-n-J., potato chips, a thermos of cold milk, and an assortment of cookies.
She packed enough food to share.
In case company should arrive...
When she was ready, she grabbed her favorite sun hat and said "I wish I where in the goblin gardens. Right now!" The room faded away to tall shrubs and towering stone figures. She found a place by a potted peach tree and set up her picnic.
"Did you really think, Sarah, You could come into my kingdom without me knowing?" a familiar voice said from behind her.
"Of course not Highness, cookie? It's raspberry, I think..." She held up a jam cookie for him to take. "Please, join me, I have plenty to share." She smiled and offered him a seat next to her. Jareth sat down and Sarah offered him a sandwich and some chips.
"What in blue-blazes is this?" He said, inspecting the sandwich.
"Peanut butter and Jelly." she said as she sipped her milk. Jareth eyeballed the sandwich and looked at Sarah.
"OH COME ON! I'm not the one with a history of slipping L.S.D. into food here..." Sarah laughed and Jareth smiled as he took a bite of the sandwich.
"That wasn't acid by the way, it was a very intricate transportation spell, thank you. If I wanted you merely dizzy, all I would have to do is whisk you off to my bedroom for a night..." Jareth quipped.
Sarah made a face.
"You have no power over me..." She shot back. They both laughed.
"Picnics are nice." Sarah thought as she watched a goblin king enjoy his first P.B.-n-J.
