She was calmer than expected. It wasn't a peaceful calm, or a calm before the storm. No. It was the numbing calm that you felt when every piece of your soul had been shattered time and time again, and there was no fixing it now.

Gone. She was gone.

Tears were too much to handle. Only once before had this happened to her, and the biggest difference from then was that she had given up, while now she'd just...stopped. There was no fight left in her; No emotion, no memories to save her. It was all...gone.

The nights had gotten longer. Had that been a sign? Should she have known this would happen? That the only true meaning to her life would be taken from her just like that? It had to have been a sign.

"It will be okay, sweetie," she'd whispered what seemed like forever ago. It had only been a day since she'd held her in her arms, and sung, and whispered all her love as they'd drifted to sleep. One precious day, where months had separated them before. "I promise, everything will be better now." Promises were made to be broken, but she'd hoped, prayed, that this one would stick and come true. If anything, for her. For her reason for being.

Bright blue eyes that mirrored another soul so deeply that it made her start, peered up at her, sleep lining her features more than it should have. "Really? It will?"

She smiled softly and replied, "Yes. It will."

But that was a lie. Unintentionally though it may have been, not hours afterwords their world had been flipped upside down. Every promise ever made didn't seem to matter anymore. Nothing did.

Not after losing her little girl.
