Jane and Maura had been together for three years. Jane had never been happier and she thought that Maura felt the same. Lately things had been different. When Maura smiled, it didn't quite reach her eyes the way it used to. Even the way she said I love you had changed, it was almost as if she was forcing out the words, like she no longer meant them. Jane didn't want to believe that things between them were ending so she had chalked up to Maura being under a lot of stress at work.

"Bye Maur, I'll see you later." Jane said as she leaned in to give Maura a kiss before they parted ways at the elevators.

Jane pulled away and looked into Maura's eyes, she didn't have to say a word, her eyes spoke for her and they were telling Jane goodbye. Jane knew it was over and nothing she did would change that.

Jane sat at the counter of her and Maura's kitchen, beer in hand. She was dreading what was going to happen tonight. Jane was going to confront Maura, she couldn't stand the thought of being in a one-sided relationship. Jane heard a car door slam and prepared herself for the hardest thing she'd ever have to do. Jane met Maura at the door.

"We have to talk." Jane said already on the verge of tears.

"Um, ok let me just get settled." Maura said pushing past Jane.

Jane reached out and grabbed Maura's arm.

"No Maura, NOW."

Jane let go of her arm and they both made their way to the couch.

"What is it Jane? I'm tired I've had a long day."

"Maura, do you love me?"

"Of course I do Jane."

"Let me ask again, do you love me?"

"Jane, what do you want me to say?"

"The truth, I just want the truth."

"No, I don't I'm sorry Jane." Maura choked out tears in her eyes.

"That's all I needed to know. Bye Maura."

Jane had already packed up a few things knowing how this night would end she grabbed her things and walked out the door for the last time.

A few weeks had passed and she had barely spoken to Maura. Every time she saw her, she was reminded how she'd give anything to be able to hold Maura again. She was alone in her feelings, Maura barely acknowledged her; it was like she didn't exist most days. Jane knew she had to move on, word around the station was Maura was seeing someone new. It had killed her when she found out.

"Jane, can you hold the elevator?" Maura yelled out running towards her.

Jane thought about letting the doors close. Maura was smiling at her and it gave Jane hope, maybe she isn't seeing someone. It was probably just a rumor. Jane pressed the hold button. There was an awkward silence and Jane towards Maura causing Maura to do the same. Jane looked in her eyes and once again, they told her everything she needed to know.

"What's her name?" Jane asked never taking her eyes off Maura.

"Ashley, look Ja…"

"There's no need to explain to me." Jane said cutting her off.

Maura was happy, she had found happiness and it wasn't with Jane. The doors opened and she stepped out, not before taking one last look at Maura. She had goodbye in her eyes, and in that moment Jane knew one thing for sure, it was over.
