I slid a brown, leather-bound book from the packed shelf in Canalave Library. The front proclaimed "The History of Eeveelutions" in golden peeling letters, printed in elaborate font. The book had intrigued me many times, and seeing as I specialised in Pokemon evolution, it would almost certainly assist me with my studies. Lucas was waiting for me downstairs, lolling around the entrance.
Ahem. I suppose I should introduce myself first. My name is Rowan. I study Pokemon, particularly evolution.
The "Eeveelutions" are my favourite evolution family. Eevee has both puzzled and interested me, with its irregular DNA and its ability to evolve seven different ways. However, I have often wondered why it is able to evolve into seven certain types. What would the Eeveelution look like, and be named, for each unique type? Was this book the answer?
I opened the precious thing at a random page, and something immediately drew my eye. Eleven Pokemon that resembled the other Eeveelutions were illustrated on the left page, taking up the whole space of the said page.
"The other Eeveelutions," I breathed, my eyes sliding to the right page in order to read the spidery words:
To evolve Eevee, one must catch or obtain an Eevee. A Fire Stone yields Flareon, a Water Stone yields Vaporeon, and a Thunder Stone yields Jolteon. High happiness during day or night yields Espeon or Umbreon respectively. Levelling up Eevee nearby a Moss Rock or Ice Rock yields Leafeon or Glaceon respectively. These are the known "Eeveelutions" of the modern day. But what about the ancient, extinct Eeveelution species?
The Fighting-type Fisteon is yielded with a Black Belt.
The Flying-type Soareon is yielded with a Sharp Beak.
The Poison-type Toxeon is yielded with a Poison Barb.
The Ground-type Quakeon is yielded with a Soft Sand.
The Rock-type Bouldeon is yielded with a Hard Stone.
The Bug-type Buzzeon is yielded with a SilverPowder.
The Dragon-type Drageon is yielded with a Dragon Fang.
The Ghost-type Phanteon is yielded with a Spell Tag.
The Steel-type Ireon is yielded with a Metal Coat.
It is unknown why these Eeveelutions died out, but it can be safely assumed that people favoured the modern-day Eeveelutions over these other ones, probably because back in the early 1700s, these items were very rarely found. Let us hope that one day, people may be able to bring back these amazing Eeveelutions and embrace their full powers.
"So, Prof, how was it?" asked Lucas, as we made our way out of Canalave.
"Very interesting," I replied. "And intriguing."
"What didja read up on?"
"A certain evolution family."
"Ah." I could see it in Lucas's face that he knew perfectly well what evolution family I meant.
"Prof, you'll never bring back the extinct Eeveelutions," he said bluntly.
"Why not?" I replied calmly.
"Because they're... well... extinct."
I laughed. "Dear Lucas, just because something is extinct, does not mean it is gone forever."
And that gave Lucas something to ponder all the way to Sandgem Town.
