Desperate Hope

They had been together for what seemed like forever. And, somehow, maybe he expected them to always be together. Ned sighed as he sat in the empty room. He was expecting Nancy to arrive in fifteen minutes. Then she would be free.

I've known you all my life

At least that's how it seems

Never known another way

Living out on a dream

Now I know you're leaving me and I'll never understand

Before I let you walk away, I have one last demand

The doorbell brought Ned out of his thoughts. He knew the time had come. In her heart Nancy had already left him for someone new. Now he was offering her the chance to make the move that would completely end their relationship.

Ned answered the door and led Nancy into the quiet living room. He was more upset than he had expected, even though he had arranged this meeting. Ned almost laughed out loud at the irony. He knew Nancy loved someone else. It upset him more than anything else he could imagine, and yet he was offering her the chance to end everything between them. More than anything, Ned wanted Nancy to stay with him. But deep down he knew she wouldn't, or couldn't.

Tell me a lie and say that you won't go

Look in my eyes and hold me even though

I realize you had to walk away

No more yesterday

Nancy sat on the couch that sat against the wall. Ned took one of the chairs off to the side. Ned just sat back and smiled at Nancy, trying to be strong for her. Nancy sat with her eyes closed for a few moments. She didn't want to hurt Ned, but she knew that she already had to some degree. Both were thinking of their relationship.

You always were my angel

Flying high above

Always looking out for me

Angel that I love

But now my dreams are fadin' like age-old photographs

That hurt too much to look at now, remind us of our past

Nancy softly spoke, barely above a whisper. Having to end her relationship with Ned was pulling her heart in two. She truly loved him, she always would. He was her first love. But her heart belonged to another. And as hard as she tried, she couldn't pretend anymore. She had to set Ned free, he deserved this last act of love.

Tell me a lie and say that you won't go

Look in my eyes and hold me even though

I realize you had to walk away

No more yesterday

Maybe we could stay together

Maybe it could last forever

Maybe if you just tell me a lie

Maybe then, we'll never say goodbye

"I'm sorry." Nancy whispered with tears in her eyes.

Ned gave her a brief hug then watched her walk away before closing the door. Leaning against it he opened his fist. On his palm lay a small ring, Nancy's promise ring.

This is just a short one shot I wrote while working on my next chapter story. I hope to have my next big story up soon. But until I get the plot worked out, I will post short stories. The song is from Shawn Micheals Farewell lyrics, found on an anthology soundtrack. Lyrics were found on the internet.
