Summary: One-shot songfic (Love Story by Taylor Swift), Abby/Ducky

"Abby?" Ducky had just entered Abby's lab, intending to tell her to go home and get some rest. He knew that several teams had given her evidence to process, and that she would work all night if not persuaded otherwise.

"Abigail?" he called again. She hadn't gone home; the lights, the machines, and the music were still on. He stopped to turn off the music, thinking she probably had not heard him calling.

Silence.

After a moment, his ears adjusted and he could hear a faint sound puncturing the silence: slow, even breathing, with an occasional snort. Ducky smiled. She was still at work, but at least she was getting some sleep!

He walked through the lab looking for her, and finally found her slumped across the desk in her office. She wasn't quiet anymore. Instead, he could hear her mumbling what sounded like a song.

It's a love story

Baby just say yes

Romeo save me

They're tryin' to tell me how to feel

Her words became unintelligible and then stopped altogether. She sighed deeply and shifted position so that he could see she was holding something to her chest. He gently tugged the small pieces of paper from her grasp, then was shocked to see that they were pictures of him!

One was a picture from his younger days… she must have gotten it from his mother. The other one was a more recent picture, taken at Christmas when Abby had caught him under the mistletoe.

He stared at the pictures, trying to make sense out of the confusion in his mind. Abby couldn't possibly – well, maybe she could – it certainly appeared as though she did. The realization turned his entire view of the world onto its head. Suddenly some of the random things she said and did made sense. She spent any free time she had in the morgue, most days. She had hinted at taking him out for dinner. Of course, she had been giving him and everyone else hugs for a long time, but lately they had gotten just a little bit longer and a little bit more intense – at least when she hugged him.

Anytime he was in danger she worried her head off, even more than she did about the others. He berated himself for failing to see what was in front of him the whole time. There was no question about his response, considering that he had been in love with her for years.

He laid the pictures back on the desk just as Abby stirred and opened her eyes. He stood frozen; there was no way of pretending he didn't know at this point. She looked up at him, her eyes wide, and then down at the pictures. Then, something he had never seen before happened.

Abby's face turned a light pink which threatened to become red. She sighed, her expression sad.

He put one finger under her chin and raised it, then leaned over and slowly, carefully kissed her. Her eyes grew even wider, and she stood up. "You shouldn't have to lean over like that, Ducky," she said softly. "I'll do the leaning." Then she kissed him, more urgently than before.

When they finally broke apart, she was smiling. "I'm glad you caught me," she whispered.

"So am I, my dear Abigail."

They kissed once more, then she drew back to rest her forehead on his. Simultaneously they asked, "Would you like to get dinner?" Laughter ensued.

"I guess that's a yes," said Abby.

"Definitely, my lotus blossom," he replied fervently.

As they left the building, she began to sing the song she had been mumbling in her sleep:

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess,
It's a love story, baby, just say yes

Ducky wrapped his arm tightly around her waist, and smiled.
