Chapter 1: Rude Awakening
Chief POV
Everything was dark. Memories were forcing their way into his head. 'Demon… This is Spartan 11… Your world will burn… Regret is a name sergeant… This is the way the world will end…. Were it so easy…'
Chief's eyes shot open, 'what happened? Where am-' Chiefs thoughts were interrupted by a middle aged man standing at a console in front of him. The man looks back and forth between the console and Chief while saying "Sorry for the quick thaw, Master Chief, things are a little hectic fight now"
Chief draws his attention from the man at the console to a second crewman stationed on the observation deck. The intercom buzzes on "Welcome back sir! We'll have you battle ready, stat." At those words Chief freezes while retuning to deep thought, 'No, this can't be. Ok, ok, think. This is obviously just a dream, there's no need to panic'. Chief quickly steps out of the cryo tube and takes a quick look around the room. He sees rows of tubes lining the walls to his left and right. The crewman at the console takes a few steps back a little intimidated by the Chief's size before continuing, "I gave you a double-dose of the wake-up stim. Take a quick walk around the cryo-bay and join me at the optical diagnostic station when you're ready". Chief takes a quick walk around the room. It is relatively empty with only a few red and yellow marked containers towards the back of the room. Once finished stretching out his joints he quickly meets up with the crewman.
The crewman leads him through two stations. The first station linked his suit up to the rooms monitoring system checking for any suit function errors. Soon after station one he is lead through a shield test system reactivating the suits shielding devise.
The intercom switches on again but this time with a more older, battle-harden voice, "Bridge to Cryo 2, this is Captain Keyes. Send the Master Chief to the bridge immediately". Chief, who was closely following the crewman, froze at the sound of the voice. Hearing the Captain's voice brought back so rather heart-wrenching memories of his death back to the Chief. 'Why does this seem so real', Chief thought, 'Ok, I have to wak-'. Chief's thoughts where cut short when the doors to the observation deck were blown off as two Elites entered the room mercilessly killing the young crewman inside. The crewman, paired with Chief, looked though the window with terror before doing his best to pull himself together and lead Chief out of the cryo bay.
Shortly entering the hallway a memory slipped into Chief's mind, 'Isn't this the place where he-', Chief quickly shoots an arm out to stop the crewman. Seconds after he does this, the wall near the door the crewman was leading him towards blows open. The crewman, with terror in his eye's looks at Chief, "how did you-"
Chief quickly cuts him off, "Now time, we need to get to the bridge now, stay close to me crewman". The crewman nodes in acceptance. Chief turns back and leads the crewman through a tube ventilation break in the wall and continue there way down parallel hall way.
The next few rooms proved fatal to the crewman as he gets his arm melted off by plasma fire. Wasting no time the Chief gives a short moment of silence for the fallen crewman as he quickly continues his way to the bridge. Each hall and room echoed with gun fire; walls stained with blood and littered with bodies releasing a sent of plasma-burnt flesh.
Once on the bridge Chief finds Captain Keyes and tenses, as he remembers the lifeless face as he fell victim to the flood. Soon after greeting each other, the Captain informs the Chief on what his mission. "Get Cortana of this ship. Keep her safe from the enemy…" the mentioning of the AI Cortana brought sorrow to his heart. Knowing Cortana's ultimate betrayal of the human race was almost unbearable for the Spartan. Chief was snapped out of his thoughts as he sees a chip waving in front of his visor. He quickly acquires the chip along with an M6 magnum. After saying their good byes Chief takes one last good look at the Captain before leaving the bridge. Though finding himself in the middle of multiple firefights on his way to the evacuation pods he continues to think of the eerie time to when he really was on the Pillar of Autumn. 'This is all to similar, could this be rea- of course not. This type of situation is not possible. This is a dream, I has to be'. Before he knew it he was standing on an evac pod ready to drop to the surface of the ring the Pillar of Autumn stumbled on.
Fear struck the Marines on board as they stair towards the ring. "What is that thing Lieutenant?" One of the Marines asked trying to hide his fear.
The pilot, too focused on piloting the craft to be phased by it, responds through here earpiece, "Hell if I know. But we're landing on it."
After what seemed like hours of sitting in the shaking escape pod they enter atmosphere when the alarm starts blaring. The pilot, now panicking, pulls hard on the joy stick, "Damn! Airbrake failure! They blew too early... I'm losing her! Bracing for impact!" Despite his best efforts to prepare for the crash Chief gets knocked unconscious.
Minutes after impact Chief wakes up to the sound of Cortana, "Chief? Chief! Can you hear me?" though the fact of him knowing exactly where he is and exactly what's going to happen should give him a felling of reassurance, it does quite the opposite.
'No, no, no, this cant be happening. It has to be a dream' Cortana continues to call to him, "Chief, you need to wake up, now!" Despite the pain shooting through his right arm he forces himself up. As soon as he does this however he freezes. Every hair on his body rises as he begins to think of his current situation. 'Ugh. Why my right arm out of all thin… why is there pain in this dream… no, no, how, this can't be real… can it, it's not possi-',
Cortana pulls him from his thoughts, "hello! Earth to Chief, we don't have time for this. We need to move now! Covenant forces are deploying to this area in search for survivors". Chief rushes out of the door only to see a gory sight. Corpse of marines scattered about just outside the pod along with their weapons and a few med packs. Beyond the bodies there is a bridge crossing a ravine. Chief quickly gives the marines a moment of silence before collecting their ammo and med packs and quickly moves across the bridge. Once Chief gets to the other side a Covenant dropship zooms toward the pod and dispatches a group of 2 Elites and what looks like about 10 Grunts. Chief ignores the group hoping they do not realize him as he makes his way toward a path leading through the mountains.
The passage is filled with more Covenant troops. Though he knows that these are Covenant troops set on wiping out the human race, he still feels for them as he quickly wipes them out. First targeting the Elites, Chief sends a clip of bullets of his MA5B AR quickly depleting their shields and ripping open their chests. Before the Grunts realize their leaders are dead, Chief lugs a grenade at them killing off the remaining enemy forces. Chief sighs as he stairs at the carnage that lay before him. "What's wrong Chief?" Cortana asks noticing his odd behavior.
"Nothing Cortana, just… all this death for a pointless cause" Chief responds. Cortana catches a brake in his voice but decides not to press any deeper. After another few seconds pass, Chief continues his way through to break between the mountains and jumps down a ten ft. drop. Chief shortly joins a raging firefight around the corner.
A group of marines, who have regrouped on what Chief knows to be a Forerunner weapons system structure, were being attacked by waves of Covenant forces. Chief was about to inform the commanding marine when a twisted thought came into his mind, 'If I tell them what is happening to me they will think I'm crazy. Even if they did believe me, there would be little to nothing they could do since the opposing force is bent on trying to exterminate us…' Chief looks over the wall at a group of Elites as they viciously fire on his position. His stomach drops as he continuous to plan out his what he will do. '… I'm going to have to go to the Covenant… If I can just get to one of the Elites without getting myself killed I might be able to end this war before we nearly get wiped out… And that's if I get passed convincing it…'
Chief looks at his comrades and realizes that if he is going to have even a remote chance at get near a Elite without getting shot at he will have to abandon his fellow marines during combat. Though it took all of his strength and shook him to the core to leave his men, he snuck off the battlefield past the Covenant troops and towards a break in the rock formation ahead. Noticing the strange behavior Cortana questions Chief, "Chief what are yo-"
Chief cuts her off, "Cortana listen, I have an idea on how I can stop this war but I need you to trust me."
Cortana takes a minute to process everything Chief is doing and what he has said before sighing, "Whatever you have planned better work John" the Chief nearly stopped. The last time he has been called by his name was just before parting with his former Spartan team.
Entering the rock formation Chief begins analyzing his options on what he will do once he comes across a Sangheili. He knows the species pretty well and he is decent at their language. But what will he say?
Chief scans the location for any possible threats. The room is dark with two passageways. One to his left and one to his right. After a brief moment the Spartan cautiously goes right. The passage led out of cave formation to a valley. Chief analyzed the scenery before him. He was half way up a hill, which lead down a deep ravine. Chief was just about to rush down the ravine when he spotted a trail of purple blood off to his right. A small grin grew on Chiefs face beneath this visor, '…Perfect…'
Elite POV
'I have spent all these years faithfully serving the Covenant, and one stupid question ruins it all'. A Sangheili, clenching her plasma wounds, does her best to lose the squadron she once was apart of. Heavy damage was taken to her mid-section as a number of Grunts and Elites shot her. Running out of energy she limps around a corner and sits up against the wall, fearing her squad will round the corner any minute. She groans in pain as she looks down at her wounds.
Chief POV
Chief cautiously tracks the blood around the side of the ravine. Spending much time studying the Sangheili taught him that these creatures could be overwhelming even when heavily injured.
The trail led him into a small patch of trees hiding a forerunner structure. Chief takes position against the southern wall of the structure as he hears a Sangheili groans in pain. He silently looks around the corner to see an Elite minor sitting against the wall holding its side. Chief sighs, 'here goes nothing', Chief quickly rounds the corner half raising the gun at the injured Elite. The Elite quickly looks at him. A moment of silence passes before Chief hesitantly says, "hey"
Ok here is the first chapter. I'm new at this writing stories thing. I have some pretty good ideas of stories to write but it's the writing part that gets me. If you have made it this far and are reading this a would love to ask for tips for writing and also if you have an idea for how you want this to go, feel free to comment them. Won't be too long until the next chapter is up. If there is anything I can promise you, it's that this story will have an ending. The thing I hate most is when an author forgets about a story or loses interest in writing them. My skills will get better as we go. Just bear with me. Thanks for reading!
