Gray

"Oh, by the way, I found Gray."

John's words are so off handed.

Jack is thunderstruck; not at all prepared for that name to be spoken aloud.

His heart races, and his mind flashes back to the last time he'd seen Gray. He sees blue eyes, so like his own, wide with fear, and he hears Gray's voice screaming for him, sobbing, pleading not to be taken. His palms begin to sweat as he relives the terror he felt so long ago when that tiny hand that fit so well within his own was ripped away from him; an inconsolable feeling of loss and sorrow settling in his heart again as though the boy's abduction happened yesterday. He feels rough hands holding him down, feels the prick of the needle...

His vision begins to tunnel and for a minute or two Jack forgets how to breathe.

Gwen breaks his reverie, he doesn't quite hear her question, but he's sure her inquiry has to do with John's parting words.

He's beyond thankful that the team is behind him and he doesn't have to explain the look of shock and sorrow that he is incapable of masking at this moment; he struggles for breath to reply to Gwen before she steps forward. "It's nothing." He winces when his voice breaks, and he can only pray that they'll let the issue drop.

He schools his features and turns to face his team. "Come on, we have work to do."

He spends days immersed in work, trying to forget again. He tells himself that it's senseless to get worked up over a boy who technically hasn't even been born yet.

But on certain nights, during the rare times that he does sleep, a new nightmare explodes from his subconscious.

He surges from his bed, his heart pounding in his chest; his screams dying upon his lips and a beloved far away voice crying "Daddy, don't let them take me!" echoing in his ears.

not mine, don't sue, fun only...blah, blah, blah
