He was nine and she was eight

She was seven and he was eight.

The promise lingered and love stayed.

And it was bittersweet.

Sasuke was not an eavesdropper.

"What? You really?"

"Yes. Anything wrong with that? I… love him."

Really. He was not eavesdropping. He was just passing by when he heard voices, talking and arguing. And there's no way he would continue listening to these voices… when he heard them mention his name.

So he stopped… and listened.

"But of course, I know Sasuke-kun would never reciprocate my feelings."

The sadness was quite evident in her voice that Sasuke could almost feel it.

But it doesn't matter to him.

Not now.

"Well, I'll wait for him."

"You're a masochist."

"I'll survive."

"Tch."

Sasuke tried to figure out who the voices were from. He was quite sure that it is from another fan girl of his. But he wasn't too sure.

"I'll train harder."

"I'll practice."

"So he won't think I am a burden."

Sasuke, who was listening to the conversation for quite some time now, was supposed to proceed to the training area.

But he didn't.

Why?

Because of a mere fan girl, or so he thought.

Or maybe, he was just waiting for them to call each other by their names. They might be someone he knew. And that opportunity soon came.

"What do you think? Can I do it?"

He heard the other person sigh exasperatingly. "Sakura-chan, you're really a masochist."

He mused. Sakura huh?

"Yeah. I think I really am."

"And Sakura, I think you love him too much."

Sasuke narrowed his eyes. Surely, they do not know the meaning of their words.

Is that really love? Tch. That's just pure obsession. He concluded to himself.

But maybe, just maybe, he was the one who does not know the true meaning of those words.

Haruno Sakura really like him. In fact, she was pronouncing her eternal love for him everyday. But he never really took notice of her.

He even ignored her at times.

Those black smoldering orbs would always stare at her in annoyance. She would always be sad because of it, of course. Her eyes would always turn glassy every time she heard those words.

"You're annoying."

But she endured.

She never loses hope. Because she loves him.

And she promised that she would love him forever and ever, till death parts them.

Or so she thought.

- - - -

She was love and he has hate.

He returned but it never stayed.

And it was never that sweet.

Kakashi was an eavesdropper.

"What? You really?"

"Shut up. Anything wrong with that?"

Really. He was really eavesdropping. He had followed those voices, talking and arguing. And there's no way he wouldn't stop listening to these voices especially when he heard them mention her name.

And he stopped… and listened.

"But she has another one now."

The sadness was quite evident in his voice that Kakashi could almost feel it.

If only she could hear them now.

But he knew it doesn't matter to her now.

Not anymore.

"I could wait."

"You're a masochist."

"Don't worry. I'll survive."

"Tch. Idiot."

"You are the idiot."

"What did you say, teme?"

Kakashi was supposed to report to the Hokage at that moment but he stayed there to listen to his confession, to Sasuke's confession.

"What do you think? Can I do it?"

He heard the other person sigh exasperatingly. "Teme, you're really a masochist."

He mused. What had happened to my team?

"Yeah. I think I really am."

"I think you love her too much."

Kakashi could almost imagine Sasuke narrowing his eyes.

And for the first time, Sasuke understood the true meaning of those words.

"Dobe, I've trained harder."

"And practiced."

"So that I could go back here sooner."

"But it's too late."

And it's really too late.
