In a Name
By: Lost-Remembrance (Red Tail)
Alena Stasny was a woman who had entered a man's world a long time ago. Granted, many things had changed since she had come into power. She loved her country and her people and did everything she could to show that appreciation.
The first time she met Jonny, she didn't really meet him. Her and Rachel kept in contact after they had graduated and went their separate ways. Rachel married Benton and had a beautiful boy. He looked just like an angel. Golden hair, blue eyes, and a smile that could light up the night sky.
It was after her best friend's death (which she often preferred not to think about, for all that it dredged up and for her friend, herself, and her country, she promised to be strong) that she finally met Jonny.
She had gone to the States to pay her respects to the grieving family of two now. She locked her emotions up tight and promised herself she would be strong for Rachel, for Benton, and for Jonny.
Her heart almost broke at the thought of the young boy, motherless, with a father stricken with grief.
"Benton," she spoke, accent noticeable in her voice. The man turned to look at her and a small smile, burdened under torment, pain, and anguish at losing his true love, met her worried, red-rimmed eyes. "How are you?"
The man gave a mirthless chuckle at the response. "Do you know how many people have asked that in the past week Alena?"
She lowered her eyes and fought the tears. "I promised myself I would be strong."
Benton quietly responded, voice choked out from a throat clogged with overwhelming emotions, "So did I."
"Where is Jonny?" Benton turned his head towards the staircase. Alena took the move as acceptance for her to seek out the small child.
She walked up, feet gaining strength and determination as she enveloped Benton in a hug. She felt the tears staining her dark suit. She said nothing, even as he pulled away from her embrace.
She almost sobbed herself when she caught sight of what he turned to-a picture of Rachel. If only she had been there, perhaps things would have been different. Perhaps the little angel upstairs would still have his mother.
'Rachel, why... why did this happen to a kind soul?' She walked up the stairs and headed towards a door instinctively where she heard the muffled sound of a child crying. She heard a door close as Benton headed towards his lab. 'Why did this happen to such a family?' She inhaled deeply, trying to collect herself, 'Why did they take you away from us?'
Her hand twisted the door handle and there she saw the angelic boy. Crying into his pillow, sobbing his heart out with hiccups and stuttered breaths, hoping that somehow he could do something to bring his mom back home.
She saw Rachel in him as she walked to the bed. Her heeled foot hit a creak in the flooring. Light blue eyes jerked up to meet her own.
"Hello, Angel." He didn't know her, but seemed to sense the kindred spirit in her, that she was his mother's best friend, or he just needed a warm body to comfort him, and a shoulder to cry on. He latched onto her and her heart ached-she wished he was hers, she missed Rachel, why wasn't Rachel here, and why, why, was Benton leaving this child alone in his grief and confusion-as he sobbed into her torso. Her eyes held tears of their own and she couldn't fight it anymore as they cascaded over and fell in a continuous stream.
"Shh, shhh." She soothed, enfolding her arms around him, hoping to shield him from the cruel world and harsh reality, "It'll be alright, Angel. Somehow it will be alright..."
