It never should have been this difficult. It never should have been this painful to start with. Every waking moment, every thought centered upon him and only him. Heat lanced through my chest, a thick ball of emotion crushing my throat from the inside.
I couldn't take this, this thought. This sheer agonizing moment of truth. A gasping sob escaped me, the world in front of me turned misty and began to swim. The first of the fat drops of rain fell from my eye lashes. Landing upon my cheek and sliding down to my chin whereupon it too fell. Just like my shattered heart.
Warm lips graced my forehead, rough hands cupping my face for the last time. I relished it with a shuddering sigh as my eye lids flickered closed. All too soon the warmth left and he backed away. I could hear the gravel beneath those steps, moving away in a steady rhythm like a heartbeat.
1 (thudump)...2 (thudump)...3 (thudump)...4 (thudump)
My eyes flashed open and an unintelligible gurgled cry escaped me. One stumbled and staggering step forward I broke into an uneven run and quickly grasped the sleeve of his jacket. The camouflage fabric wrinkling beneath my desperate fingers. The cloth was familiar and slightly heavy, grungy with sweat and dirt, rough.
"W-wait! Please?" I whispered in a hoarse pleading tone. I could feel my pulse rushing in my ears, the sounds of engines revving and base activities fading in the background as I focused solely on him.
"I've waited for five years, Lenore, I'm done waiting." The comfort of his BDU's was then wrenched from my grasp and with it the shattered remains of my heart. I watched through swimming vision as he walked away from me. My whole world right then and there was crushed, crumbling, and falling apart. The wind grasped at my clothes and hair with a harsh chill, whipping it around me.
Slowly my legs sank out from under me, knees colliding with gravel dusted tarmac was ignored even when I knew I would be digging gravel out of the impressions it made painfully into my skin. The rushing and roaring of my blood in my ears was the only sound I could comprehend as his words surged through my brain on a one track loop.
I watched brokenly as he climbed into the large military vehicle and drove up the ramp into the aircraft. Just as suddenly as he was there, with a single blink, he was gone. Along with all commotion that was once there. It had been in slow motion moments earlier and now it seemed to be time lapsed. Nothing made sense to me any longer, time had no meaning.
I had no meaning.
