Fear of Drowning

Lily had been watching Alice and Molly's reactions for a few weeks now. It was obvious to everyone who knew how to look.

She wondered how she had not noticed it before Remus had helpfully pointed it out to her. She should have noticed! She was one of Alice's best friends!

It had started the one day when they were going to go swimming in the lake. It was an incredibly warm day so all the Gryffindors had decided to relax since it was a Sunday.

"I don't know Molly I just don't think I can do it! It's too dangerous!" Alice had said in a distressed voice as Molly dragged her closer and closer to the edge of the lake.

It was rather well known in their house that Alice was afraid of drowning ever since she had been dropped in a large lake by mistake when she had been six and had panicked after swallowing a large amount of water and had passed out soon afterwards.

Her mother's muggleborn friend had done CPR on her as soon as she had been rescued from the lake and had saved her life.

What had cemented her fear happened when she had turned ten and her cousin had committed suicide and drowned herself in a large body of water. She had been terrified of any large amount of water ever since.

Her father had told her, "The pleasures of love are always in proportion to our fears. You loved your cousin very much so you now fear that what happened to her will happen to you. It won't so don't worry."

That hadn't stopped her from fearing though.

Her mother made been somewhat more helpful with her absently read quote: "When things are bad, we take comfort in the thought that they could get worse. And when they are, we find hope in the thought that things are so bad they have to get better."

That had comforted Alice somewhat and gave her hope that things would get better.

Molly ignored Alice's arguments and dumped the other girl in the shallower area of the lake.

"There, not so bad now is it?"

No one else had ever managed to get Alice into even a shallow pool and here Molly had managed to get her into the lake. There was a shocked silence before everyone began cheering for Alice being able to overcome her fear.

It had not been so obvious before that but now it was.

Lily was positive Alice and Molly were together.

She had hugged Remus in her happiness for telling her.
