The Doctor cradled his 5 month old daughter in his arms, waving to Sarah Jane as she stepped out of the TARDIS. She was off to visit her Aunt Lavinia and the Doctor had convinced her to leave the baby at home. He thought she could use a night off and he wanted to prove he was perfectly capable of taking care of their daughter by himself.
Everything was fine right up until bath time. The Doctor had never bathed the baby before because Sarah Jane always insisted it was her job. Now it was finally his turn, and he had absolutely no idea what he was doing.
At first he was doing alright, filling the sink and making sure the water wasn't too hot or too cold, but when it came to the actual bathing part things got interesting.
As he turned to pick the baby up, he realized the end of his scarf had somehow ended up in the sink. He made an attempt to pull the scarf out while still holding her, but failed miserably. He slowly put her down again and removed his scarf, hanging it carelessly over the rocking chair.
Once he'd placed her in the sink and made sure she was sitting up properly, he began gently scrubbing her with the cloth Sarah Jane always used. All was well until she began splashing about, completely soaking the Doctor's coat and shirt.
"Stop that!" He said, but couldn't hide his large grin. She was far too adorable for him to be angry. He quickly finished bathing her and wrapped her up in a pink fuzzy towel. He set her down, just for a moment, to remove his coat. She began to fuss, causing him to drop the wet coat right in the middle of the floor and scoop her up into his arms.
"Shhh it's alright, I haven't gone anywhere," he soothed.
Soon he found himself sitting on the floor, still in wet clothes and the baby still wrapped up in a towel. He rocked her back and forth, wanting to make sure she was calm when he got her ready for bed.
Suddenly he heard Sarah Jane clear her throat, causing him to jump and snap his head up.
"What have you done?" She asked jokingly, motioning to the wet clothes scattered across the room and the puddles of water everywhere.
"I gave her a bath," he said proudly.
"Ah, and I see you've done a fine job of it too," she smirked, crossing the room and kneeling beside the Doctor. She kissed him on the cheek and planted a gentle kiss on the baby's head. She then took the baby out of his arms and giggled.
"You haven't even dressed her yet!"
"I was getting to it!" He said in an attempt to defend himself. She only laughed harder and shook her head. She carried the baby off to finish getting her ready for bed, leaving the Doctor to clean up his disaster all on his own.
When she returned, she was pleasantly surprised to find the Doctor had cleaned everything up and changed into dry clothes.
"I just put her to bed. Thanks for cleaning up," Sarah Jane said warmly.
He shrugged and pulled her in for a kiss. For someone who claimed so often to hate domesticity, when it came to Sarah Jane he couldn't help but enjoy every second of it.
