Mavis sat alone in her room. Her father's motionless body lay before her. She couldn't think, let alone move. He was all she had. Now he was dead. What did that mean for her? Sure everyone's family members had been dying because of the war. But this was Mavis's dad. It was all different.

Mavis had thought that since she had always helped her friends with their loss when they lost a sibling or parent, she would be fine. But she's not. Another tear rolled down her pale face. Citizens weren't allowed to go outside. Not for 6 months. The radio would always warn you to stay inside. Always. That the northerners roam the streets, armed with machine guns prepared to see any western people they see. And they would definitely see Mavis. Her long blond hair and big brown eyes, a perfect example of a westerner.

Mavis thought for a moment. She had never even seen a northerner before. Her whole life she'd been afraid of these people she'd never even seen. She had only heard rumours, that they had black hair and black eyes, olive colored skin. Ideas started sprouting in Mavis's head like rapid fire, stupid ideas, crazy ideas, ideas that could kill Mavis. But when she thought about it more, she was going to die anyway right? Whatever her father had died from probably some kind of disease was in her house. She was probably infected right now. I should go outside...she thought. It can't hurt. Well...it could hurt...She stood up. But I just wanna...Mavis walked to her house's door. See…

She opened it. Her eyes widened. Everything was rubble. She ran outside. Her neighbors houses. All rubble. There was a war...She was living in a wasteland! And she didn't even know. She couldn't see anything besides dirt and the remains of her once lively and colorful neighborhood for miles. She turned around to look at her house. Why was it still there? It didn't make any sense. Had the northerners bombed her neighborhood and somehow missed her house? Impossible.

Suddenly she heard a noise. Something had moved. Someone was there. A northerner? She panicked. Mavis didn't bother to see who or what the thing was she just raced back into her house.

Mavis peeked out her window. Who was it? A survivor? One of her friends?! She sighed. It was probably a northerner. No, it was a northerner. That's when she saw it. A thing moving in the remains or the house across from Mavis's. They were wearing a black cape thing and started moving towards her house. She couldn't tell who it was. But just to be safe she locked the door. She looked out her window again. The person was coming closer. Mavis started getting a little scared. Now they were only a few steps from her door. What if the lock doesn't stop it!

And then the figure collapsed. She could hear it coughing and wheezing. It was hurt! Mavis hurried outside, whoever this person was they needed help. She opened her door and was about to approach the thing but she realized, what if they were fooling her! Just trying to get her outside so they cool kill her! She screamed.

"No! No!" She covered her face and fell to the ground as if the person was already strangling her. "I don't wanna die! Please! Stop!" Then she realized they weren't strangling her. She took or hands off her face. The person was staring at her.

"Huh?"
