It rang three times before I heard the speaking and laughing of my kids in the background, before Riley, my 5-year-old son answered, "Hello?" He answered.
"Hey buddy, hows it going?" I spoke into the transmitter, a smile on my face.
"Daddy!" He exclaimed, "Mommy's telling us all the stories about you!"
"Is she? What did she say?" I asked.
"Loads of things, but. Daddy, when you coming home?" He asked, suddenly quieter.
"Buddy, I'm already there." I said, "Take a look around you, and I'm there." I smiled. He was quiet for a moment, and I heard someone speaking to him in the background, Cam?
"Love you, Papa." He said, back on the phone.
"Love you too, Ri." I replied.
Then I heard the phone being passed onto somebody else.
"Zach?" My wife, Cammie, said into the transmitter. I could tell she was biting her lip, a habit of hers when she's nervous, or upset.
"I'm here, baby." I answered, and I could tell she smiled. I did also.
"I miss you so much."
"I miss you too." I answered.
"Don't worry about the kids, their doing okay. I'm keeping them busy."
"Yeah, Ri told me." I chuckled. She laughed also.
"I wish you were here, with me." She said, "I want to be in your arms again."
"You are." I reassured her, "I'm with you, right now. Just close your eyes, and I'm there. I'm kissing you right now and I'm enveloping you in a hug, it's just the two of us. Can you see it?"
"Yeah." She answered.
"Just close your eyes. And I'm there."
"Can you feel it?" She asked.
"What?"
"That I'm there with you."
"Always." I replied.
"I love you, Zach."
"I love you too."
"Stay safe."
"Always." I replied. "Give a kiss to little Angie for me."
I heard her kiss the small baby in her arms, then the small gurgle from Angie, on the other end of the line.
"Remember, I'm already there, with You, Riley and Angie. No matter happens, I'll always be there. I'll see you soon." I said.
"I love you, hun." She said, "Bye."
"Love you too, babe" I finished. The hung up, as she did.
