Listen to the Rain
He knew he wasn't alone, but the loss of his best friend still hurt. The pain was still there, and it felt like it was never going to go away.
"Riza…"
He lay there on the cemetery grass. The uncut hair of the graves. It was close to midnight and the stars were already out. They were the only people alive in that space of land, so there was no need to be formal anymore.
She sat next to him, facing his headstone. Reading his name over and over again.
"What is it?" She felt his hand slip into hers.
"It's raining again."
Her eyes traveled down to the lying form beside her and saw tears rolling down his cheek. It was the second time they visited the cemetery, but only a week has passed since his death.
She gently squeezed his hand as the tears soaked the ground beneath. A few minutes passed and one thought was making the silence feel deafening.
Maes Hughes, their best friend and strongest supporter...gone.
It was getting slightly difficult to breathe as she watched the storm. Her eyes stung and her vision blurred as the clouds came.
He felt a drop of water fall on his cheek and looked up to see her head bowed. Tears were sliding down her brown eyes and onto his shirt. It was now his turn to comfort her.
His hand reached up to the back off her head and he pulled her down to lie with him. Her blond hair cascaded down his arm as she rested her head on his shoulder. Their hands that were still together rested on his chest.
She was the only one who could even begin to understand the pain, and that was one more reason why they couldn't lose each other.
He couldn't lose her.
