Close, But No Cigar

"If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?" - Jeremiah 12:5

Poor Substitute

"But I'm a substitute for another guy, I look pretty tall but my heels are high", 'Substitute', The Who

The radio blared into life as Dean turned the key in the ignition. He made a moue of distaste before switching it off with a flourish.

Sam was working his way through a bag of stale donuts to stave of his hangover from last night's celebration. He offered some to Dean who recoiled in disgust.

'Dean' was dead before he saw the silver blade slide into his chest like a hot knife through butter.

"Not even close," Sam smirked as he pushed the body from the car. No thing could compete with his brother.

Now I've just gotta find him.

Rules of Engagement

"Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor's crown except by competing according to the rules." - 2 Timothy 2:5

"There, take that you ugly sonovabitch," Sam laughed in the face of the demonic beast trapped in the circle of complicated sigils.

"Nice work, Sammy," said Dean.

"That'll show Dad that I can hunt on my own. I don't need his help."

"Hey, take it easy. We're family, we work together. You don't have to compete with him."

Sam's answer was drowned out by the creature's triumphant roar.

"Hey, you did use calf's blood in the spell ingredients, like Dad said, didn't you?" asked Dean.

Sam turned an alarming shade of crimson. "Ah. I think we need to run. Now."

A/N: Sam's ready for the end game. Set prior to the end of season 4.

Absolute Power

"Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." - 1 Corinthians 9:25

He was so tired of hearing how his broken shell of a brother was going to save them.

Sam was more than capable. Ruby had taught him well and the lessons had even been enjoyable.

He just had to stay focused and if that meant a few innocents dying… well, the ends justify the means, especially when it felt this good.

Once he killed Lilith there would be no end to the things that he could do. Hell just needed a firm hand to keep it under control.

He didn't have to compete against Dean.

He knew he was better.
