It Gets Cold Sometimes

OoOoOoOoO

Preview: Rhys has never been a very healthy person. In fact, Rhys has been fighting a rare and life-threatening disease all his life without even knowing it. When the disease finally starts taking its toll on the healer, the band can do nothing but hope… and some fear for the worst.

Pairings: TitaniaxRhys, maybe some minor RolfxMist

(I'm not entirely sure of the time frame for this fic… I've only used a few people, and I'm pretty sure they're the ones you start with. Except Ike's father isn't in it… So I guess I dunno.)

Rhys sat patiently with Rolf, watching Oscar and Titania spar. They'd been at it for a while…though it was only a spar, it was still quite the sight. Rolf and Rhys watched them practice often, and they were occasionally joined by Mist or Boyd or Ike.

Rhys had had a slight headache since that morning, but this wasn't a rare occurrence, and usually a little fresh air helped to remove the problem. This worked now too, but not as well as normal. Now, when the two knights' practice lances clashed on armor or each other, Rhys' head would throb.

He suspected a migraine, only usually both light and sound struck him during one. He coughed, and Oscar landed an unusually nice blow on Titania's arm. This didn't go unnoticed by the priest. Not wanting to distract his paladin friend, he got up and tried toward his quarters to find something to settle his cough. He rose too quickly however, and became a little dizzy.

The ground swayed beneath him, blinked, and put his hand to his head. This time, neither of the two practicing mercenaries noticed, but Rolf did.

"Rhys?" He asked; concern tinted the young boy's question.

"I'm all right; I'm just goin to go lie down for a while." The cleric smiled reassuringly.

"Alright…"Rolf answered. Not entirely satisfied, he watched as Rhys walked away.

Rhys could still hear the occasional clang or thud while Oscar and Titania thrust, dodged and parried. Each sound caused a throb to his head and vision: soon his sight was blurred, and darkening. He stumbled.

Ike, just returning from retrieving his sister, walked up to the fort with a perfect view of Rhys. At the distance he was at, he couldn't tell that Rhys was acting strange at all. Mist was talking to him, as well, and he sometimes directed his attention to her, as well. They neared the base, and Ike looked up from mist to see Rhys fall. "Rhys!" He called, and sped off. Rolf exclaimed something and he, Titania, and Oscar ran to their fallen friend, arriving shortly before Ike.

"Gingerly, Oscar turned the redhead over. "Rhys?" He asked quietly.

No answer.

"Rhys??" Ike repeated, taking his palm and searching for a pulse. He found one, quick and light. "He doesn't seem seriously harmed… his pulse is a little fast, though. What happened?"

"I'm not sure. I'd heard him cough, but that was it." Titania said quickly.

"…" Rolf sat, listening for a couple moments. "I… When he got up, he kind of stumbled a bit, like he was dizzy. He said he was going to lie down, but he kept walking like that. I told Oscar and they stopped right when-" Rolf was talking fast, and tears welled up, but Oscar stopped him with a touch on the shoulder.

"It's alright, he'll be fine. He just needs rest." Oscar assured him. Silence ensued as they carried him to his quarters.
