Blame Swing Girl at Heart for this one. City of Glass is responsible for the following fic. You should read it because it is heartbreakingly awesome, but it is not necessary to read that fic to get the gist of what's going on.
When it comes down to it, Joe is a pretty simple guy. For the most part, life isn't that hard to figure out, and when it is, the answer is in the Scriptures. People think he's weird and they don't really understand him. They call him Teen Jesus behind his back, but Joe sort of takes it as a compliment. Jesus was kind of awesome and if that's the worst people say about him, he thinks he's doing okay. He hates that he has to wear shoes to school this year because Figgins made him, but he understands that it's important to respect your elders, and be considerate of other peoples' health, so he does what he's told with no complaint.
God pretty much takes care of stuff, but that doesn't mean life doesn't suck sometimes. It doesn't mean bad stuff doesn't happen, even to good people. He might be simple, and he might not have watched TV until the guys were all over at Kurt and Finn's house last year, but he still knows life sometimes gives you the short end of the stick, even if you are awesome like Kurt. All that stuff was supposed to make you stronger, and he knew that it usually did.
Tragedy definitely made Quinn stronger.
She would tell most people that she's stronger now for what happened to her, and Joe would have to agree.
Except now, she looks really, really small and lost and out of control, and Joe doesn't quite know what to do with that.
Quinn, who has always been so sure of herself, always been so confident and strong, suddenly seems so fragile dressed in all black silently sobbing next to him in the pew. He hears her sniffling, and so he hands her a tissue, because at least it's a way to help.
And so far, since they got the news, he's felt pretty helpless.
He didn't know Kurt that well, so he's not all that shaken up by it. Maybe he is still in shock, and that's why he doesn't feel sad yet. Still, no matter how many times he repeats the words in his head, it just doesn't feel quite real.
Quinn had taken the first flight home after she'd gotten the news. So did everyone, and it should've been great seeing everyone together again, especially Quinn, but it wasn't.
He doesn't know if Kurt belongs in heaven. Suddenly there are a lot of things that Joe isn't sure of anymore.
So he does the only thing he can.
And prays.
Sorry I'm not sorry. Blame Raul the Muse.
