When they finally make it back, Edo staring blankly ahead in numb shock because there is still a part of him that cannot believe that he's actually alive and home, the first thing Edo does is shoot a quick glance back over his shoulder. Looking to catch Ryo's eye, to smirk at him as if to say, "See, asshole. We made it out alive."
Except Ryo isn't there, and Edo pretends that there isn't an ice cold lump suddenly lodged in the centre of his chest when he realizes that Judai isn't there either; when he finally catches a glimpse of Sho and sees the resigned pain etched into those soft features.
When he realizes that not everybody made it back.
The second thing Edo does, once he manages to shake off the gut-deep chill and is capable of moving about and functioning on a basic level once more, is smile. The expression a little too bright and quite obviously false while he shakily gets to his feet and makes an asinine comment about needing a shower. All too aware of that Andersen kid shooting a glare in his direction while he jams his hands into his pockets and pretends that something in the back of his skull isn't screaming and screaming about how he always winds up alone in the end.
Judai's little charmed circle is staring at him as if he's sprouted a few extra body parts, but Edo keeps smiling until his face hurts, if only because it's easier to keep his jaw clenched tight that way. Knowing that the instant he relaxes the screaming in the back of his head will manage to explode outward as it always does and knowing that he wants to be alone when that happens.
Eventually, Fubuki mumbles that Edo can use the shower in his room, Edo nodding his thanks (but still not opening his mouth, not daring to) and the pair of them shuffle off in silence towards the dorms.
When he's finally under the warmth of the shower's spray, Edo allows himself to fall apart. Aware on some level that Fubuki can more than likely hear him through the walls, but unable to keep the wild shriek of anguish that has been building and building locked away any longer as he huddles under the cascading water. Nothing more than a trembling ball of pain.
And it's not that he likes Hell Kaiser by any stretch of the imagination. It's not that he cares. It's….
It's weeks, months, spent in a strange world with only one familiar face, only one person to talk to. It's being huddled in a damp, cold cave, shoulder to shoulder and talking about the most inane things possible in some vain attempt to ignore the fact that you're both entirely aware that you're going to die soon.
It's the memory of being huddled there in the dark and hissing, "God, I hate you," with one breath and then having the next breath stolen away by a hard, angry kiss.
The third thing Edo does, once he manages to heave himself out of the shower shivering with cold and emotion, is skulk silently out of Fubuki's room. Endlessly thankful that Fubuki appears to be elsewhere, more than likely wherever the rest of the charmed circle is, as he makes his single-minded way out of the dorm and towards the docks. Intent on leaving any and every thought of Hell Kaiser Ryo behind him on this damn island.
He may always wind up alone in the end, but it doesn't matter. He's Edo Phoenix. He never needed anyone to begin with.
