Not The Reaction I Expected
Nick was walking towards the checkout line at the grocery store, he had had to make an emergency diaper run. He was almost to the checkout line when something caught his eye. In a large bin were a ton of huge pillows and the pillows were in the shape of his family's favorite college mascot.
"Jasmine would love one of these, she loves Calvin." Nick thought to himself.
He grabbed one of the pillows and then went and paid for his items.
When he got home he got up next to Jasmine and said "Look Jazz, daddy got you a present."
He showed her what he had gotten her.
"That's cute Nicky." Jackie said as she glanced at the pillow.
"I know, I thought so too." He said.
Jasmine took it from his hands and he smiled, momentarily anyway.
"Yucky." Jasmine said as she threw the pillow back at Nick.
"Yucky what do you mean yucky?" Nick said sounding very surprised.
He gave her the pillow again.
"Yucky dada." Jasmine said again as she threw the pillow across the room.
Jackie laughed "Honey I think she's scared of it." She said.
"Oh, maybe." He said as he picked up the pillow again.
"Look Jazz, Calvin is nice, see, give him a hug." He said as he gave the pillow a hug to show her that Calvin meant no harm.
Jasmine took the pillow back, but instead of hugging it she looked at it with disgust and said "Yucky, bad dog." And then she threw it again.
"He's not a dog, he's a bear." Nick mumbled.
Jackie stifled a laugh, it was obvious Nick was getting frustrated and he sounded a little hurt that Jasmine had rejected his gift like that.
Nick gave up and eventually forgot about it until Jasmine was ready for bed. When Jasmine was all tucked in he decided to show her Calvin one last time.
This time when Jasmine took the pillow from Nick's hand she punched poor Calvin in the eye, and "yucky dada, bad dog." She then threw it right back towards Nicky.
Jackie had to leave the room to keep from bursting out in laughter.
He sighed, picked up Calvin and mumbled "Goodnight Jasmine." Before leaving her room.
Jackie was waiting for him in the hallway.
"It's not funny." Nick said when he saw the smirk on her face.
"No your right, it's not funny it is downright hysterical." She said.
"This stupid thing cost me seven dollars, I'm going to have to go back to the store tomorrow just so I can return it." He said.
"Are you mad that you have to return it or are you hurt that she didn't like it?" Jackie asked.
"Well both." Nick admitted and then added "That was not the reaction I expected, I thought her little eyes would light up and she'd hug and kiss on it, not throw it back into my face."
Jackie smiled "That's what makes kids so much fun, they are unpredictable. The important thing is that you tried. You're a really great father, you know that right?"
"Thanks." He said and then grinned and added "I'm not too bad a husband either, am I?"
"Nah, you're an ok one of those too." She said with a smirk.
He laughed and then a small smile spread across his handsome face.
"What?" she asked.
"I guess you're right." He answered.
"About what?"
"When you stop and think about it, it is kind of funny." He replied.
She nodded.
They walked into their bedroom and sat down on the bed together.
"I'm kind of hungry, I think I'll have some ice cream, do you want any?" he asked.
"Sure, that sounds good." She replied.
He left the room and came back a few minutes later carrying two bowls of ice cream. He handed her one of the bowls.
"Yucky." She said barely able to keep a straight face.
"Oh shush." He said and she burst out laughing.
They ate their ice cream and when they were finished they enjoyed a very steamy make out session before happily falling asleep in each others arms.
