A/N:
So this is just a quick free-verse I've had in my files for a while now and thought I would put it out there to the wonderful fandom. I'll probably end up writing several different chapters, each highlighting one character and some sides, usually the darker ones, that you don't really see in the musical. I'm hoping to give a new perspective to some of these characters, since they are all beautifully designed and have a million layers to them. Hope you enjoy :)
Oh, Eponine.
Ma bichette
You're just beginning to understand
You're oh-so-tragically irrelevent.
Sure, you served the man you love
with your very last breath
But
Among leaders of empires
Among war heroes and
Ardent revolutionaries
And everyone else who mattered,
You're a little bit... little.
What was that your mother used to say?
Oh, that's right.
Your tears will do you no good.
She had gotten one thing right, I suppose.
Perhaps you should have listened to her for once.
Perhaps you shouldn't have gotten
so... involved with those students.
They were so optimistic
and saw all the best in this city,
Where you saw the ashes,
They saw the ammunition for a flame
Bright enough to illuminate an entire nation
But, truly, you never honestly believed them.
You don't know how to.
You believed in him, though.
A little too much.
The stars in his eyes,
They almost made up for the lack in your skies.
And It had been so long since you believed in something.
You didn't care about France.
France never cared about you.
You did it for him.
And, remind me again, what did he do for you?
Nothing.
Well, I mean, of course he cried for you in the end
Because it was too late.
Shame you had to die,
end your life
go down as another nameless maytr in a hopeless cause
For him to finally realize
None of it
Ever
Did
Any
Good.
You're a symbol, 'Ponine
For everything they were fighting to change
It was all for you,
the weary, the hungry, the trembling
the dusty, old forgotten souls
But the tunnel was a bit too long
The night was a bit too dark
And their flame burned out
Right along with you.
Just a story they would tell
To remind themselves
"Never again."
At least the others died for their cause
You were just too scared to speak up,
Too scared to tell him "No"
That you were silenced
But don't fret, darling.
He's happy.
So is she.
She's teaching him to forget
Time is marching on
And every day you're becoming nothing but
a stinging memory he's pleased to feel fading
Right along with his best friends
And the girl who
Almost
Was...

Please review with any constructive criticism or opinions, I love hearing them! Also, if you have any characters in particular you want me to write about, leave it in your review and I'll try my best to publish it as soon as possible. I'll pretty much do anyone, so just let me know :)
