I Remember
She had been such a sweet child. Growing up, she'd done everything she could to please us. She'd learned her lessons well, becoming a fierce little hawk-warrior in the air and a reserved, modest gentle-lady upon the ground.
I remember very well her first flight. She soared above the earth, defying gravity, and when she landed, her hair was mussed and ruffled, her cheeks rosy, her eyes bright. I'd never seen her so happy.
I remember those nights when she would lie in bed, and I would- sometimes, if she had done exceptionally well that day- tell her stories of the falcons and serpiente. She would listen, always with her pretty, golden eyes on my face, with rapt attention. I was... fond of those moments.
I remember the way she would drill with those avians we picked to make up the first Royal Flight. She fought as well as any of them, whirling about with her staff, dueling with her sword. She was an excellent archer; I taught her that myself.
I remember the day she chose her pair bond among the avians, the day she became Tuuli Thea. I remember her carefully veiled nervousness at the great responsibility. I remember how her people loved her for it.
And of course... of course I also remember... the day she died. The three of us, Araceli and Syfka and I, we cast a spell on the Diente of the Serpiente, and he stabbed our Alasdair in the back with a poisoned knife- poison that came from our own apothecary. The avians executed some of the most high-ranking members of serpiente society in retaliation.
The avians and the serpiente were plunged into war. I remember that as well.
My Alasadair, my Alasdair... I remember well the day we murdered you.
