Disclaimer: I don't own anything, but apparently you can rent Yato for five yen.

Memories

There was something missing. The entire day, Hiyori felt it like a hole in her heart. Something, something critically important, was gone from her life, missing. And it hurt. Something was gone, lost, and it hurt, like a missing limb. But she couldn't figure out what it was. Her mother and father wished her a nice day when she left for school, all of her friends had been there. Her friends… Were they all there? Yes, of course they were. No one was absent that day.

Hiyori looked through her bag a few times, trying to see if she had accidentally left something at home, everything was there. She flipped through her planner, thinking maybe she had been forgetting an assignment. Everything was done, she was even a little ahead in math. Math… Did that have something to do with it? No, it couldn't. She had everything done, and why would she be missing math anyway?

Before she knew it, the final bell for school was ringing. Hiyori walked out with her friends, chatting about boys. As usual, they didn't understand why she liked her precious kickboxer so much. She got her scarf out of her bag, wrapping the fluffy pink fabric around her neck. The action tugged at a memory on the edge of her consciousness, something to do with a fluffy scarf…. Her friends kept talking, but Hiyori had stopped paying attention. She was trying to pin down that memory, but it kept slipping through her fingertips. What was it? What was she missing? She pulled the fabric of her scarf up over her nose to keep out the cold, inhaling the comforting scent. Smells nice…

Hiyori spent the rest of the day trying to figure out what she was missing, turning her entire room upside down to see if anything had been misplaced. Finding everything exactly where it was supposed to be, she flopped down on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Tears pricked at her eyes, the phantom pain still tight in her chest.

Hiyori stared at the ceiling for what felt like hours, turning it over and over in her mind as she got more and more exhausted. Maybe she was just being paranoid. Maybe nothing was missing after all….

It wasn't long after that the pain lessened to a dull ache, and she drifted off to sleep, only to wake up at a knock on her window.

"Hiyori? Are you awake?"

Hiyori sat up in bed, looking at the window. She had left it open, and sitting on the windowsill, halfway in her room already was…

"Yato!" She cried, startling the stray god nearly into falling out the window.

She shoved the covers back, leapt out of bed and started to run, tripping on the sheets tangled around her feet. Yato caught her, and found to his surprise that she wouldn't let go once she righted herself. Her shoulders were shaking, and his shirt was getting wet.

"Hiyori! Hiyori, what's wrong?" he asked, helplessly wrapping his arms around the crying girl.

"I forgot you." She took great heaving breaths into between her words, trying to control hiccuping sobs. "Yato, I forgot you. Both of you."
