Shield Prices

"What the hell!" The scruffy swordsman stared at him incredulously. "One thousand rupees for ten arrows. Are you out of your mind?"

This conversation was not going the way he wanted it too. Gabriel Hawkes, owner of Hawkes' Fine Swords, was getting rather tired of people questioning his prices. Especially scrawny swordsmen who looked like they could hardly afford their next meal, let alone ten of the finest arrows Hyrule had to offer.

"Young sir," Oh how the words left an oily tasted on his tongue when spoken to the child. "These arrows are unrivaled in accuracy and penetration. One well-placed shot with one of these, and your enemy will tremble to face you."

"Well if he's still trembling then the damn arrow obviously didn't do its job! And as for your 'unrivaled penetration', you can go ahead and stick it up your ass for all I care! Anyway, I didn't come for your stupid arrows. I have an order to deliver from the palace."

That was just too much. "Well if the princess thinks she can just send an order, than she could at least do better than sending a vagabond like you!"

"It's not for the princess, it's for the captain of the guard."

"Well the same goes for him! Now leave my shop!"

"I AM THE CAPTAIN OF THE GODDAMN GUARD!" The boy roared. As a way of proof, he held out a scroll. Sniffing, Hawkes took the scroll out of the boy's hand. After studying it profusely, he had to admit it was legitimate. He sighed deeply, as much as it pained him, he would have to be civil to the boy.

"Many apologies for our misunderstanding," he twittered through gritted teeth. "The fault is entirely mine."

The Captain glowered at him for a moment before speaking. "I need a ceremonial sword. For…ceremonial stuff."

"Well, it just so happens that we have just the thing, Master Link, if you would just come back here."

Somewhat miffed by the shop owner's sudden change of heart, Link followed the man back. "Ah! Here it is!" With a sigh of delight, he pulled out a beautifully crafted sword. "Zora craftsmanship. Ice-tempered watersteel, not much for battle, I'm afraid, but it would look beautiful worn on the hip. To make it even better, it's only two thousand rupees; at a discount for our new captain, you understand."

The young captain almost seemed awestruck for a moment. Hawkes felt his hopes rising. Maybe he had finally impressed the fabled hero. Then the boy lifted his eyes from the sword to meet the shopkeeper's intent gaze. "You know those things are ten-a-rupee up on Lanyru." His tone was that of longsuffering.

Hawkes was shocked for a moment. "I assure, my young lord, the temper on those blades is terribly shoddy and the jewels are mere stones taken from the riverbed. No, those ungraceful chunks of metal are hardly worthy for common fencing practice, let alone a knighting."

"Okay, that's a little out of my price range. What about a shield. My last one caught fire and burned."

"Aha! This will do perfectly, and at a low price to! Goron-forged steel, fireproof and literally indestructible. Only…800 rupees?"

With a sigh, the captain turned on his heel and walked out of the shop. Hawkes sighed; why did no one want to pay such reasonable prices?
