Darko

Twisted mind and lonely heart

Images stab like a bitter dart.

Lost, confused, death escaped

Still this life, burdened with hate.

Helping hands don't understand

Time slips by, unstoppable sand.

Unable to help, too stubborn to see

Comforting faces ignore sad pleas.

Seeking, praying, searching for the end

Forced to obey, on Frank he depends.

He'll know when it's over, he cannot yield

They are defenseless and he is the shield.

Slowly, secretly, the pieces construe,

Allies, not many, unconscious stay true.

Perplexity vanishes, resignation remains

Fate has decreed it, hero bound in chains.

Clues lead him onward, continue to pour;

Perfection, the beauty of a cellar door.

Dusty, forgotten, frozen in time

Grandma Death's house of lingering grime.

Loving half-smiles, as the chime rings true

And shadows take form in revenge overdue.

Malice, violence, deformed sneering faces

Those glittering knives ripped out of dark cases.

Pinned to the ground or coughing in pain

To both, ever nearing destruction is plain.

A flash of bright light, a terrible screech

Fumbling to get there, unable to reach.

Pale face lies still as the car door slams

Furry feet shuffle, unwittingly damned.

A last look at love lost, lying limply alone

The hero rises, in black with white bone.

Following blind instinct, unable to run

Leading the sound of a hollow ringing gun.

A shuttering face, friends flee from the dark

Beside that mask, the bullet hit its mark.

The hero leaves, grief and hope driven

As over the horizon, a new sun has risen.

The days, the minutes, the seconds survived

Until now, this day of reckoning arrived.

Decision made, the world set right

Engine begins on that fateful flight.

The world turns backwards, ceases its spin

Appearing, his face twists in a rueful grin.

Sacrifice made, the house starts to shake

Ripped from their sleep friends, crying, quake.

Memories gone, though the feeling remains

Stabs of dark happenstance linger in the brain.

Weeping and pained the lost family stands

Throbbing hearts and tightly clasped hands.

Thoughts confused, twisted, time undone

Remain unaware--the hero dies in this one.
