Because once upon a time somebody decided that we were the bad guys; we didn't choose this for ourselves.

There is one among us, Neil (Nell), who has the gift to hide away a memory or two so well that not even Edward Cullen will ever find it. Because we have a secret. In fact, we have a lot of them. Neil's existents, our reasoning…our hate. These are the things that she must hide from the rest of our race. We have our reasons…trust me.

The Cullens think that we look at them with greed but don't believe everything you hear because that is a lie. We look at them with envy. Because once upon a time somebody decided that we would never get our happily ever after. Ever.

If the Cullens knew, or anyone else for that matter, that this is what we wanted, it would seem a weakness. And we would lose. We never lose.

A long time ago someone decided that we would never get our happily ever after, and that there always be people who thought that we should be destroyed, and quite frankly, we couldn't care less. We didn't want to live this way and we never will.

We are not bad people, or vampires if you want to get technical, people made us this way. The future isn't set in stone. Ask Alice Cullen.

We don't define our future, everyone around us does. And if we show weakness, we will lose. And we never lose.

We are the Volturi.

"Jane," Alec began.

"Pity," I answered, "pity."

"Jane, darling; where is Neil?" Aro called from across the room.

"I'll go find her master." I said, my face an expressionless mask. Neil was young. She had to learn. You don't walk away from Aro. But Aro had refused me the pleasure of causing her pain. I could not be angry. Aro would find out and I would die, so I was not angry.

I found Neil perched on top of a church steeple not far from Volterra.

"Come," I said, "Aro wants to see you." I tried to resist torturing her for now. She was important to Aro.

She followed silently behind me. She should talk more. Aro thinks she's in denial.
