2 Weeks Before
Cam Fisher looks out onto the sandy shoreline of Long Island. There she sits, her amber eyes sparkling, brown hair cascading down her shoulders. Massie Block. A blonde guy runs out and sits by her. Derrick Harrington, his best friend. They share a sweet passionate kiss. Cam turns away. He can't look at her kissing someone else. It hurts too much. Derrick leaves and Cam comes.
"Hey, Cam." She says. He sits right next to her.
"Hey." He smiles, looking into her eyes.
"Promise me something, Cam." She says.
"Okay, what?"
"If I am ever hurt, do promise to save me?" she looks deep into his blue eye, then his green one.
"I Promise." The two hook pinkies.
Now
Cam looks down at the grey stone. Massie's grave. He thought back to that day, that one happy day, only 14 days ago. He promised. He didn't keep that promise. That night, Derrick got too drunk at a dance club. Cam was there, but he let Derrick drive Massie home. Derrick sped up to 100 miles per hour. He swerved and drove the car right off a bridge. Derrick was killed instantly. But, not Massie. She died slowly and painfully. Cam blinked away salty tears. He saw Massie at her last moments, in the hospital.
"Cam... I-I-I love you... always have...I forgive you and love you always..." she had said. Then she died.
"She always did love you." A voice said behind him. Cam turned around. William Block.
"But.. Derrick..." Cam started.
"You loved Claire. Massie loved you. Derrick never loved Massie. She was his plaything. She had him because she couldn't get you." He said gravely. "I just wish you loved her back. You never would have done this to her." He turned around and walked away.
The thing was, he had loved her. He just didn't know that she loved him back.
He gave one last look at her grave. He broke his promise. He said he would save her, but instead he killed her.
"Massie. I'm sorry." He whispered.
Afterwards
Nightime quickly came, along with a thunder storm. Cam tossed and turned. He couldn't sleep. Her face kept popping up into his brain, paralyzing him. He got up and went into the kitchen. He got an Advil bottle out. Lightening struck, and soon after thunder.
"You promised!" it roared. His hands shook as he wept. He downed the whole bottle with a bottle of Corona. He turned on the engine to his BMW and sped out of the garage. He drove his car right off a bridge and into Lake Kawasaki. Days later, one of his close friends, Josh, found a note on the kitchen counter.
I am sorry for what I have done. I was supposed to be the hero, but instead I killed Massie. The pain is too much for me to handle. This is for my baby. My last wish is to be buried by my on true love. Massie Block. Love always, Cam
