So this is a cool little idea I had almost two months ago. Goes back to the season 4 (?) finale I believe. Or maybe it was season 5. Either way, this is going to be a good number of chapters long and updates are going to be very slow since school was supposed to start tomorrow (but got postponed until Tuesday because of Irene) and I am going to have a ton of work from now until Christmas.

Enjoy!

The Confusion of the Conception

Chapter One

"I'm fine, Bones, you can stop looking at me like that," he sighed, taking a hand off the steering wheel and pushing it through his hair. His fingers got lodged in a clump of dried salt gel and he dropped it onto his leg.

"What? How am I looking at you?" she asked defensively, averting her gaze out her window instead.

"You're acting like I'm gonna stand on top of the car waving my pants around singing the Barney song," he said. He expected her to remark on the Barney bit, but she remained silent and that worried him.

An awkward silence congealed all around the inside of Booth's SUV, causing him to fidget all the way to Brennan's apartment building while she maintained her stare out the window.

"Are we good?" he asked worriedly when he stopped in front and she started to get out.

"Of course," she replied, her tone revealing her confusion at his question. "Why would there be a problem?"

"I just, you know...I know you were worried about me, that's all," he mumbled. "But I'm fine. There's nothing wrong with my brain. The octopus machine said so." His efforts to lighten the mood went unnoticed. Brennan stood up outside the car and closed the door so she could talk to him through the window.

"I was concerned about losing my partner," she admitted. "I kept remembering how I felt after that woman shot you and I was told that you had died. This is entirely ridiculous, of course. You are obviously not dead. I have to think about some things. I'll see you tomorrow. Goodbye."

She turned away without giving him a chance to say anything else and he sat there for another minute, watching her quickly climb the steps to the building. He wondered if what she had to think about had anything to do with his sperm waiting at the clinic for her. That thought spurred him into action and he threw his car in park and ran up the steps after her.

Booth caught up with her in the elevator and squeezed himself through the doors to Brennan's bewilderment. He waited until the doors had completely closed after him before speaking.

"Can we talk about, you know, the issue?" he muttered, avoiding eye contact with the pretense of watching for her floor number to appear above the doors.

"I have a lot of work to catch up on, Booth," she told him. "This case has had me avoiding the internship applications that I should have read through two weeks ago."

"Can't those wait another day? They're only kids; one more day won't make the end of their lives. We are old. This is more important." She looked appalled at that comment and the elevator dinged to signal her floor. She stepped out and turned around quickly so that he couldn't follow her.

"I will not speak with you about anything when you're so stressed out about it that you're having visual hallucinations," she said, tense and a little bit irritated. The doors slid shut to Booth's gaping mouth and she stalked into her apartment to take a nap, something out of her usual routine but that she felt was warranted in this situation.

So, how was it? Good enough to call for a review?

Side note: I hope people have seen the first clip from season 7. I am so excited.
