Not a totally original idea concerning Murata, but one I thought could stand to be revisited. :D

Someday, Yozak thought, he was going to go ahead and ask about it, but for now it was fun just to speculate on who and what Murata might have been in all those past lives. He'd gotten the idea right from the start that there were some of those lives the sage didn't want to remember in any detail, but surely there were a few happier memories out of 4000 years of living spread over at least two different worlds. There was too much joy and mischief in the kid to believe he'd only learned how to laugh in the last 15 years.
For the time being, it was amusing enough to see, for example, the way Murata's eyes lit up when Yozak greeted him at the door wearing his latest concoction of an outfit, all ribbons and lace. He spent the next hour happily listening to rare and welcome laughter while His Excellency gave up all pretense of dignity, unraveling each and every one of his ribbons one by one, trailing them playfully over Yozak's skin and following each trail with his tongue, until, finally leaving ribbons scattered all over the bed and the floor, he pounced.
And if that wasn't enough to convince anyone that Murata must certainly have been a cat in a former life, there was the way he fell asleep afterward, curled up half on top of Yozak, head tucked under his chin, toes and fingers gently flexing in a kneading motion. If that wasn't the human version of a contented purr coming out of the kid, Yozak thought, he wasn't Miss Biceps.
"Ah, Muraken," Yozak murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of Murata's head before he let himself drift off as well. "Doesn't really matter what you were before, anyway. I'm just glad I get to be the one who gets to be with you like this in this lifetime."
