A Day in the Life of Hedwig
Prologue
"CRACK!" Eyla, the old, sick, snowy owl raised her head. "What was that?" She cried in alarm. Her five eggs stood together in the small nest on the cliff edge. Exol, the large barn owl hooted softly to his wife, hiding his bursting excitement. "It was our eggs. It's time" Eyla tried to get up to see them, but stumbled and fell. "I don't think that I'll live to see them born!" She screeched in anguish. Exol hopped over to her "you'll make it!" he cried "just long enough. I'll stay with you all the way. No matter what it takes." "CRACK!" A pebble fell off the cliff, and a thin crack appeared in the egg. "This one's very strong." Exol observed trying to take his wife's mind off of her pain. It worked. "Yes." She said softly "He will make a wonderful warrior for the colony. He will make us proud." "I was thinking a nobler cause." Said Exol dreamily. Eyla looked at him questioningly "What did you have in mind?" "I was thinking than we could give him up to the wizards and witches around the world." He said more to himself Than to Eyla. "Give him up?" Exclaimed Eyla half leaping into the air. She shouted in pain just as the egg nearly split with a mighty "CRACK!" Exol now could not hide his hopping and trilling Eyla suddenly spoke up "What about the others? Exol stopped hopping, and his trills subsided just as a tiny beak appeared. Exol was too depressed to notice. The truth had hit the two owls. Only one had survived. The baby snowy owl arrived in silence. It took a few moments for Exol to turn and look at his child. "A girl." he said simply, yet at the same time proudly. "I can't see her." Said Eyla, weakening. "I will carry you." Exol announces so determinedly, it was scary. Exol slid Eyla onto his back with much difficulty, and carried her to the infant. "Beautiful." Eyla said hoarsely. Exol slid her off his back "You may name her." No reply. "Eyla?" Exol cried. No reply. Exol looked at her. Her breast had stopped moving. He looked to his daughter. "I will name her Eyla in honor of her mother." The night was filled with grief. There has been one life created, yet also five lost.
