"Happy Birthday! "
"You remembered! I was a blip on your radar despite the girls throwing themselves at you. I think I feel a tear coming on." Veronica said as her best friend sat across from her and tossed a small wrapped package at her lunch tray. She caught it and examined the wrapping paper. She shook the box and sniffed at it like drug dog sniffing a coke filled backpack. "A present too? How did I ever get so lucky? That's it. I am definitely crying. Here it comes..."
"Just shut up and open your present." Wallace said.
"I have to guess what it is first. Is it smaller than a bread box?"
"One more word out of you and I'm taking it back."
"No!" Veronica cried overdramatically. She snatched the small wrapped box off the table and held it as far away from Wallace as possible. "Mine!"
"Then please just open it."
Veronica sighed and began to gently unwrap the gift, trying desperately to save the wrapping paper. She ignored Wallace's eye roll as the box slowly came into view underneath and she was able to lift the top off. Nestled inside was a silver necklace wrapped around the tiny video recorder that Veronica had been sighing over for weeks.
When Veronica's eyes welled up and she flung herself at him in a huge hug Wallace pretended to roll his eyes and suffer in silence but inside he was jumping for joy. It wasn't often that he could make his bff smile without any of the underlying cynicism and bitterness that so often enveloped her personality, but when he pulled it off it made him the happiest man in the world. He loved being her brother from another mother, bff, and the one who could make her smile.
