A Lesson In Honesty
"Ok boys and girls get your coats on for recess." Jackie instructed her class.
Instead of hustling to get ready however not one child moved from their seats.
"Why is everyone still sitting down?" Jackie asked the kids, utterly bewildered.
"Because you didn't say go yet Mrs. Stokes." One little girl finally said.
"You're right, I didn't, silly Mrs. Stokes, go." Jackie said as she pointed at them like she always did.
Finally the kids stood up and got ready.
Jackie told the kids they weren't allowed to go until she actually said go, that way the kids didn't miss any last minute instructions that she was trying to give them.
"Today guys we are running a little late so you may just line up instead of sitting back down at your seats." She told them.
The kids got in line, chatting happily with one another.
"Our voices are off." Jackie said patiently.
All but two little boys quieted down.
"Garrett and James, you might want to be quiet because I think you'll like what I'm going to tell you."
The two little boys immediately quit talking and looked at her.
"You guys, did such a good job not going to get ready until I told you too that I am going to put five marbles in our marble jar."
"Yay." All the kids cheered happily.
Jackie walked over to the marble jar and grabbed some marbles.
"You guys have to count with me though are you ready?"
"Yeah." The replied excitedly.
"Ok, one, two, three, four, five." The kids counted, with Jackie leading them as she dropped the marbles in the jar.
Jackie then accidently on purpose dropped an extra marble in.
"Oops, an extra one snuck in there, should I take it out or leave it in there?" She asked.
"Leave it." The kids unanimously said.
Jackie chuckled to herself.
"Alright I will."
"Yay." They all cheered again.
"Ok, as soon as you're all quiet and facing forward again we'll go outside." She told them.
"Mrs. Stokes are you going outside with us?" One little girl asked.
"Nope, this morning Miss Masters has duty." Jackie told her.
"Oh, but I wanted to show you how good I can do the monkey bars, I've been practicing." The little girl replied.
"I have recess duty this afternoon, can you show me then?" Jackie asked her.
Normally Jackie would have went out for just a couple minutes so she could watch her but at the moment she really had to pee.
"Ok." The little girl replied happily.
"Mrs. Stokes I owe you two minutes." A little boy name Jack said.
"You do, for what bud?"
"Because I talked during quiet time this morning and you said I owed you two minutes." He said.
Every morning after the kids had hung up their coats and backpacks and had sat down they had quiet time for about ten minutes to help them calm down and get ready for the day so it wasn't such a madhouse in the morning.
Usually whenever kids had to walk the square for whatever reason Jackie wrote their names on a list so she wouldn't forget but she obviously had forgotten to do that this morning.
"You know buddy, Mrs. Stokes forgot about that and since you did the good and right thing by reminding me and being honest I won't make you owe me, when you get outside you can just go play."
"Thanks Mrs. Stokes." He told her, utterly thrilled.
"Thank you for being honest." She said with a smile.
Jack got back in line quietly.
"Alright, Miss Master's class is going out, when the last person from her class gets by us, follow them." Jackie told the little girl who was first in line.
"Ok." She replied.
Jackie watched as her students walked out into the hallway and down to the doors to go outside for recess to make sure they were quiet in the hall.
She smiled to herself when the last of her students had made it outside, so far it had been a great day and this afternoon her class had library so she'd get a small break which was nice.
She loved the days when her students behaved!
The End!
