James doesn't like the look on Teddy's face. His eyes are glittering and his hair seems to be a brighter shade of blue. It's a look that James knows from when they were younger—Teddy has a plan.
It's probably going to be bad.
"What do you want?" he asks, looking at Teddy warily.
"I bought a car," Teddy says, his grin even wider—literally. His face stretches until it fits a bigger grin. It's slightly terrifying.
"A car," James repeats. Teddy nods, making his grin go back to normal.
"I thought the two of us could fix it up. Brotherly bonding, you know?"
James looks Teddy up and down, from his blue hair to his red Converses. "We're not brothers," he says.
Teddy walks over and places an arm around James' shoulder. "We are by choice," he says. He tries to pull James up. "See it, at least," he offers.
James rolls his eyes.
"Fine."
…
It's a hunk of trash.
That's the first thing James notices.
"You want us to fix this?" he asks Teddy, raising an eyebrow as far as he can.
Teddy nods. He still has that grin on his face. There's no grin on James'.
"It may take some new parts, but we can do it!" he says.
"Yeah, and that would be great if we could afford it," James says, still having his eyebrow raised. "How are you getting the money to get these new parts?"
Teddy lets out a deep groan that seems to go on forever—James stops counting how long it is after he gets to five seconds.
"Listen," Teddy says, putting a hand on James' shoulder. His hair is slowly turning yellow at the tips. "This car could be the greatest thing ever. It's so much easier to drive than apparate. I think. And it'll be good as new in no time; once we get the parts we can fix it with magic in a snap."
James rolls his eyes again. He's probably not going to be able to convince Teddy, but he'll still try.
"We don't have the parts, though!" he points out. He also puts a hand on Teddy's shoulder, mirroring the older boy's actions.
"We'll get them. And then we'll build the best car ever."
James is still skeptical about how they're going to find all the money for a car, but Teddy does have an interesting proposition; having a car would be pretty great. He sighs.
"Let's get to work."
