Three men walked through the LA City Jail that afternoon. One, a young officer who had only been working his post for a few months, two, a middle aged man, a detective, to be specific, Detective Gumshoe, and the final man was the prisoner, a psychopathic, cruel, blackmailing excuse for a human being who had just been convicted, Matt Engarde.
The three men were silent as they walked down the hallway. About halfway to his cell, Matt put on a sickening smile as he started to speak.
"Hah. I thought a defense attorney was supposed to get his client a not guilty verdict instead of a guilty verdict."
The young officer was about to retort, but Detective Gumshoe sent him a look telling him not to speak up.
"If it wasn't for that defense attorney, and that prosecutor, and especially that assassin, I would have gotten off scot-free."
Sicko...the officer thought in his head.
"Nothing ended the way I wanted it to. Not the business with Celeste not coming out, not with the trial...I kinda wish that I had just kept to myself around...what was that attorney's name again? Trite? Wright? Something like that. He totally fell for my act, and if I had kept him in the dark, it would have worked; I mean, the plan was perfect."
Detective Gumshoe and the young officer were severely restraining themselves from responding to Matt's monologue.
"Ooh, but I do have to admit, DeKiller kidnapping the attorney's girlfriend was quite a nice touch, along with holding her hostage."
"Shut up," Detective Gumshoe said quietly, not being able to keep it in.
"Aww, man...But I wanted to keep talking, Detective," Matt whined. "So I will."
"Seriously though, what did the guy expect? He expected me to be naive, to take the risk? Man, people just don't know me that well," Matt said. Detective Gumshoe opened Matt's cell.
"I still can't believe I forgot the most important thing...that ignorance is bliss." Matt looked over at the two men. "Never forget it, Officer."
After Matt's cell was closed, Detective Gumshoe and the officer walked back down the hallway.
"Officer..." Detective Gumshoe said.
"What?"
"Ignorance may be bliss, but the truth will set you free. And the truth is, this is truly the way things should have ended."
