Reading Between The Lines
He'd never said he loved her.
But he'd never said he hated her, either.
She proclaimed her affections for him daily.
And to anyone watching these frequent moments between the two, they always saw him shoot her down the same ways. Of course, no one could see into his mind, so they only heard what was said and didn't hear what was said.
Sasuke always thought every one should mind their own damn business anyway.
"Will you go out with me Sasuke-kun?" she would ask while twisting her hands behind her back nervously.
"No, you're annoying," he would reply.
You're annoying because I can't get you out of my head, was the unspoken tagline.
"You're weak." He would scorn her on missions if she was hurt, or in danger of being hurt. But I'll keep protecting you until you get strong.
Every day it was the same. And every day he cringed inwardly as her eyes filled with tears, but remained stoic and refused himself (and her) the words his lips needed to form.
After all, walls had ears. And Sasuke feared that behind these walls his brother surely loomed. Waiting for the moment Sasuke felt safe and sure to let her in, only to have her ripped from him in a sick re-write of past events.
Konoha would burn before that happened.
Maybe she understood all this, and maybe she didn't. Her persistence never left Sasuke too positive of either.
Yeah, he'd never said he loved her.
But he'd never said he hated her either.
Maybe one day Sakura would learn to read between the lines.
Sorry if the story is OOC at all, but it's hard to write Sasuke being anything but a prick (love him as I do). Please leave a review!
